Hi all, just changed the coolant temp sensor (genuine) on my 1.6 petrol bora due to a fluctuating gauge and a fault code recorded for it,all seems well nice steady gauge good heater etc but two things i,m not sure about. After a good run , half hour the lower rad hose is still cold but the top one is nice and hot and also noticed the thermostat is located at the end of the bottom hose where i thought they were in the top one,why is this? Could i still have an air lock or am i worrying to much? i did have to dissconnect a couple of hoses at first as heater went cold at idle but now is nice and hot all the time and coolant stays at the correct level although it did drop after the first test drive but is fine now, thanks As a bonus my mpg is improving as well since replacing it.

Level is fine, spot on max mark it only dropped the once about 3 cm in the expansion bottle after the first test run which i assume is prob caused by some air finding its way out,why would they put the thermostat in the bottom hose?

I suspect that in this weather the radiator will be luke warm at best. Have you tried taking it for a run - then leaving it standing idling for 10 mins afterwards - and then measure the temperatures. (leave it running till your elec fans cut in)
In the current cold ambient, any hot water hitting the rad coming out of the head will be cooled very quickly as you drive - it will only pick up temp when it is in standing traffic. I'm no cooling expert but can only assume that having he stat in the bottom hose would cause a delay in it's eventual opening , but its been designed that way for whatever reason - so as long as your guage is OK and car seems normal I wouldn't worry about that.

I agree, nothing to worry about as long as it doesn't overheat. I came back from a run and left my Astra idling on Sunday (Mrs was driving and I was on phone, she got out at the shops and left me in warm with heater on!) and after 20 mins the gauge was still mid-range and not hot enough for fans to kick in

Had a chat with some cooling guys - it really depands on how the engine bypass plumbing is done as to whether the stat is at the top or elsewhere. either way - worry less about its design, but focus on making sure theres no leaks, the expansion tank is bled out etc, and that it doesn't overheat again etc. sounds like you have probably cracked it anyway.

Thanks for the advice everyone i was starting to come to the conclusion that it was just down to the cool air at the moment, its been around 5-6 above here so i'll just ignore it i think as everything else seems fine as before, had wondered about the thermostat but i have my doubts as it warms up fine and dosent overheat.
