Hi my 2007 plate Zafira has failed it’s mot today . It has failed on the following reasons :
Suspension arm has excessive play in a pin/bush front inner (both) (2.4.G.2) Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after second fast idle excessive (7.3.D.3) Parking brake : efficiency below requirements (3.7.B.7)
Firstly would someone be able to give me more details on what this all means ? What needs fixing ? How much would this all cost parts and labour at a garage (estimate)? What parts would be needed ?
Thanks in advance your help is much appreciated . Ian

Ian Hi, When was the vehicle last serviced? Mileage? From the MoT, 1) front suspension inner pivots are worn, this is either the pivot bolt or the bushes in the arm being worn, or both.....best to replace the suspension arms and their pivot bolts as a whole. A proper looksee will reveal all.... 2)The CO emission level has been exceeded....but what is the reading, could be well over or marginal....more info needed. One of the other members better versed in emissions and diagnostics may offer advice to resolve better than me. 3) Parking brake efficiency poor....could be that the handbrake cable is stretching or is overstretched causing the impaired efficiency...further investigation needed to determine root cause...what are the brake test readings recorded values may give an idea.. So, front suspension parts needed, further investigation into emissions failure required and further investigation into rear brakes needed. Its difficult from my arm chair to tell what parts are required to effect repairs. You really need to take itto a reputable garage/workshop/mechanic. What is your location! Maybe someone here can recommend a mobile mechanic or garage? Estimates may vary depending on the garage/workshop services..... Perhaps not the answers you were looking for...

I see it as a pair of front wishbones fitted £180 ish depending on parts quality used (including labour) 2. One hours diagnostics (£50) leading to possibly a cat or O2 sensor or something else at considerable cost (or both). 3. Both rear caliper's - pads - discs at £300 ish depending on parts quality used (including labour) A final bill of £700 or £800 would not be excessive, using low quality - pattern parts. If you wanted high quality parts or the emissions fault is not "as guessed" the cost would be higher. Cheap for the benefit to own a car that:
Does not, wander around the road - cut out tyres, roll away down hills or gas people in traffic jams.Perhaps? Also not the answers you were looking for...

Hello Ian Did the test station/garage not go through the items with you describing what failed and why As well as an estimated cost Yeah... It would be rude to hand over the MOT refusal without a repair quote attached.

Hi thank you for the replies It was kwikfit that did the mot . I don’t usually go to them but the usual garage I go to was fully booked and needed it doing ASAP . No they just handed me the piece of paper with that information for a refusal of mot certificate didn’t explain it at all . Just told me I’d have to pay them to look at it again and then they could give me a quote for the repairs .
Thanks
Ian

They need to charge you some labour to diagnose the gas test failure. No point on quoting the suspension and brakes out - as without all three issues being resolved - you still won't have an MOT. How many miles has the car covered?

Sounds like it wants 2 new suspension arms and the wheel alignment setting afterwards. The brakes will need stripping to diagnose the issue, which will cost to find out and as said above the emissions will need time spending to diagnose what is required, again chargeable.
