Evening all, We have a micra in at the moment that needs a timing chain replacement, Its a 2003 1,0 engine code, Cr1ode, I am just trying to get a idea as to how long it would take to install a timing chain kit, Auto data says that the gearbox needs to be removed!!
Have any of u replaced the timing chain in one of these cars?

Have any of u replaced the timing chain in one of these cars? I have done one of these on a 2004 1.5DCi Micra diesel. The sump had to come off. Not a nice job. Tensioner was really awkward to set up. Whole job took me hours and hours over a weekend. Not done a petrol one.

An absolute bitch. One of the worst out there. Leave a good day, and don't forget to make sure you have all the seals and gaskets to hand in advance. The gearbox does not have to come off, if I remember correctly, but it helps to get it right out of the way - as Remmington says, you need to be able to drop the sump, and the gearbox precludes that being easy. CM covered this one some time back (or a similar car), and it took two separate photo sequences (over two months) to cover it all!

Could be B.S but remember a mate of mine saying he managed to do it in situ as he was adamant he wasn't taking engine out.I have also heard another bit of b.s saying some unscrupulous people drill out part of the tensioner or sensor housing or something along those lines to let the car run for longer so they can sell them on to avoid the expense of replacement.

Thanks for your replies, I will give the customer a idea as to what this job would cost and go from there, I doubt I there is enough money left in a 2003 Micra for this type of job.

On the old Almera's etc, elongate the hole for the cam sensor so it can be adjusted..Obviously on an end of life motor

wasnt nissan doing a software update on these that allowed more tolerance on the cam data signal, basically it would let a car run with a stretched chain longer without making eml come on.

Wasn't that in conjuction with the mod that Rhubarb mentions? Would make sense, as the elongated tensioner hole would keep the chain from flapping too much, and then in the meantime the offset on the cam/crank signals in the software would keep things sweet there!

I think that mod with the cam sensor was more Almera than Micra, but I could be wrong

We went ahead with this, You were all spot on,the engine and box had to be droped, the sump would not come off with out removing the gear box, when the engine was out it was not too bad to replace the chain,

What was the bill in the end...?
