After a really rubbish experience with a contractor for RAC last year (2+ hour wait, bloke really not interested in towing car home despite badly overcharging alternator) I let my RAC membership lapse.
Now I'm thinking of getting another breakdown policy. I'd rather not go for the pay and claim back type and stick with a firm that has one phone number and they sort it out.
So, any advice and ideas peeps?

Cant compare them with anybody else; but have used quotelinedirect.com twice. 1 in Uk and 1 in Germany and service was excellent both times.
Worth a look

Green Flag? I've had Recovery Plus for several years at about £60 a year. Not had to use them yet so can't comment on service.

I just went cheap, used rescuemycar.com, was £30 or sommat for a year, havent used it for the last few years i've had it, then again I didnt use the aa for about 8 years and when I did need them they told me it would be 3 hours to get to me, not peak time, just as that was their service, cancelled that and saved a couple of hundred in the process, anyway so dont know how good they are, but it's still cheaper than a tow off the motorway or recovery after an accident payout. Cover seems pretty good as welll, thats homestart and recovery to where ever I want and return of passengers

I was in Aberystwyth (reasonably big town), and needed tow home (so about 25 miles)
Called RAC, they said a patrol would be over. Called back in 45mins saying the Patrol was over hours so they'd send a contractor from Aberaeron (15 miles away in the other direction)
I was at the office, so the waiting wasn't a big problem, but the contractor that came's dismissive attiude did rile.
He tried bullshitting me that all the dials going bright, the ABS coming on light on and the battery charging lamp on were in fact because the alternator was undercharging. He checked the voltage with a snap on meter and it was showing OK, so he was all for me driving home. Luckily as he was faffing the engine was running, so everything warmed up.
Once the alty got hot again the meter showed it chucking out 18v and climbing (which on a Rover 45 1.8 is deffo overcharging). He then, for some reason, hit the alty with a hammer (which was a bit silly as I was going to return this 2 week old alty to the factors, luckily it didn't break)
He was suggesting I could drive it home (No way, the battery on it was a sealed Varta silver that had been on it six months) but I demanded a tow. He asked me where I wanted to go and I said "the other side of Machynlleth (bout 18 mile away). He reluctantly got it strapped down, and as we got going he asked "exactly where is your place?" and I told him, and he replied "if I knew it was there I'd have got someone else out to tow you." Which after waiting for a few hours did get me rather annoyed.
All in all I was not impressed, I know it's not RAC itself's fault (the same contractor works for all the majors) but it has put me off unfortunately.

Greenflag on Audi RAC on Alfa Breakdown insurance with van insurance on van Have only used cover on van and service was good. They listened to what I told them on 'phone (auxillary drive belt hanging down; no pas; van overheating; can't be driven) and sent a tow truck out immediately All companies are ok I suppose, until they drop a bollock and fail to deliver good service. The previous cover I had for the van were shit. 5 hours to come to me. Despite many calls (I had a load on the van and a customer screaming for it), they sent the recovery man to the wrong town
