2005 nissan almera 64,000 mls 1.5 petrol manual, car won't stay in fifth gear whilst driving, you can get it to go in and you can let clutch up and freewheel but touch the accelerator and it immediately throws it out, can't hold it in either it starts to crunch, all other gears work perfectly inc reverse, drives fine 1st-4th,clutch is fine also, any hints i.e gearbox related or could it be a selector rod problem

You could always change the battery terminals and fit the 063 if it's Jap

Finally got around to changing this gearbox and all is well,so i have a few options now A.does anyone want the old box(free),as i said was perfect in all other gears 1-4 covered 60,000mls and very clean not dirty or oily B.strip it down and have a go at a repair as probably just the syncro has gone(never done this so would give me an education) C.Put it on my scrap pile and save the hassle

Washington-built Nissan 'boxes are dead weak. Really they need their oil changing every two years like you needed to on Hondas.

Lets get it stripped down and find out why Rebuild it and get it sold on eBay

Are these boxes anything like the toyota, where the fifth gear is inside the cover on the end of the box? Have seen the nut holding the fift gear come loose causing them to jump out of gear, also easy to replace the gear with the box in place. Just a thought, may not apply in your case.
