Got one arriving next Wednesday with steam appearing from behind the dash on the drivers side, I'm suspecting the heater matrix as the customer did advise the cooling system is losing coolant.
Never done one before, anyone got any tips or done one, big job, little job, short cuts etc!!!

Never done one before, anyone got any tips or done one, big job, little job, short cuts etc!!! big job, complete dash out. theres no shortcuts,a/c models are even worse. no need to take doors off.can take seats out,can help if vans a bulkhead version. usual stuff inside, centre console, steering column, radio, heater control. might need to remove wiper motor and mechanism from scuttle. theres 3 studs that stick out into scuttle, these hold dash in. theres 3 more further down, these hold heater unit onto bulkhead. getting the outside matrix pipes to "click"into place is the hardest part, sometimes its better to replace these pipes, esp if cars overheated,as these pipes can distort,go brittle and break when forced back on. ps the self tapers that go into plastic use a corsa thread.

How did you find a customer with a 56 plate Citroen Berlingo and enough money to embark on this job. its prob a berlingo multispace(a 5 seater version with windows) a lot of them were adapted for disabled wheelchair transport. so needs must with these sorts of specialist vehicles. yes a/c system has to be degassed(from what i can remember, you have to uncouple the a/c pipes at bulkhead) to allow heater box to fall forward into car in order to pull matrix upwards.

At our place the boss normally pays off the customers for practicing on their cars anyway when they get bo**ocked up so money not much required

OK seem to be running into problems here with this Berlingo today. Removed all what can be seen from the dash assembly, clocks out centre clocks out heater controls detached 10 mm bolt behind it removed, centre consul out two bolts one on either side of the dash A posts areas, three bolts 10 mm behind wiper motor scuttle area, dash loose on both sides but something still holding it in?
Anyone any ideas I can't see anything holding the dash in now but definitely will not come out!

in scuttle area there should be 3 rubber bungs(rectangular)and body colour, pop these out, theres 10mm nuts in there. also seem to remember a 10mm bolt going left behind radio area somewhere, this one always used to catch us out.
do you agree, its not a nice job!!

Your absolutely right french crap fanatic there is a 10 mm bolt behind the radio, clearly I missed that one, and there is also another screw directly at the centre bottom of the dash in front of the gear stick area. These two bolt/screw removed and the dash could be lifted over the top of the steering column and out, but I chose to remove the column as I was working on my own on this job. The heater box was a bit of a problem at first to remove, I tried to remove the A/C Expansion Valve no way was I separating that valve from the Evaporator mounting flange, clearly alloy material and very eroded into place. I was left wondering at this point how I was going to get this matrix out, then close observation of the heater unit case I noticed two 10 mm silver coloured bolts, one in the top and one in the bottom, which actually separate the air con side of the heater box from the heater matrix side of the heater box, if that makes sense, then not forgetting the hidden 10 mm bolt directly underneath the heater box in front of the Air Bag control unit in front of the gear stick, with this bolt removed the heater box will very easily separate into two sections and the heater box can be pulled right back into the footwell area without any problems and then very easily remove the heater matrix, which when removed had plenty coolant in the heater box itself. I am not entirely convinced however that the heater matrix was at fault, there are two O rings that seal the matrix to the plastic elbow that connects through the bulkhead to the heater pipes, my understanding suggests that these O rings were the cause of the leak. The new matrix came ready assembled and after cleaning out the heater box I just installed the new matrix. When dismantling I decided that to prevent any problems with electrical wiring during the reassembly I would re-connect all switches after removal from the dash so that all wiring connections would be easy to re-install, this made life easy. However, as there is a passenger Air Bag fitted with a long insulated black lead, one must remember to route the wiring before installing the dash, I forgot having rapped it up and then had to partially remove the dash and then unwrapped it. Also, don't forget the two speaker wires that go to each corner at the top of the dash, i.e. the left A post and the right A post, the wires are long and can fall down out of sight, and is too late after the dash is installed to recover them. I was not looking forward to this job at all, the main problem with any involved jobs to me in this day and age are that technical information is seldom written properly, the Haynes manual is vague and misses out many vital areas that are required, clearly those manuals are not written by technical experts anymore, and for any person doing the job first time round I would not fully rely on their manuals, in my opinion based on experience.
