Hi,
Got a 2009 Ford Kuga 2.0 tdci come in for fuel leak. The fuel tank got crack at side and above propshaft, One side of the tank as swell/expanded touching the prop. Any body know anything common to cause this as somebody mention about injectors causing back pressure in the tank.
Thanks Liam

Tank gonna be expensive...
We have had a few 2.0TDci Ford Galaxy's towed in for leaking tanks.
Lads nicking diesel with a battery drill, they just drill a hole thru the bottom on the tank. Nasty...

Five hundred and something and a five day wait. Customer found a second hand one. Started getting in bits tonight.

It's abit odd thought accident damage myself but there doesn't seem to be any signs of it or repairs. I had my doubts about the story of injectors pressuring the tank but thought I'd ask on here.
Thanks for the advice.

It seems a bit unlikely that a diesel fuel tank would be pressurized by injector back-leakage, but then again, the fuel does get quite hot, and it all depends on the position of the fuel cooler in the system.
I have heard horror stories of plastic fuel tanks exploding with low-levels of diesel fuel. Two things have to be in place; firstly, the tank needs to be fairly empty, as it's the vapour that is explosive with diesel fuel, secondly you need a spark-ignition, which usually arises from poor earthing of the tank filler neck and filler-adapter piece to the car body, so a static charge builds-up between two parts of the same void.
My only other thought is that a plastic tank will start to revert to its pre-moulded shape if it is heated, e.g. by a close-proximity exhaust pipe without a heat-shield, and maybe that would make a warm tank bulge?

Job done, Somebody been here before the heat shield had fairly new big washers on as it had corroded around the clips and there signs of the prop touching the heat shield in other places but not now. I think the heat shield came adrift, touch the prop and got hot. There isn't alot of room between prop and tank and the tank has melted in the same position as the marks on the prop. Customer not had it long. Thanks for everybody input.
