We had a letter a few weeks ago stating VW now offer a 24 month warranty on EGR failure for up to 24 months after emissions scandal update

In hindsight they should have gone the full hog and included an new EGR within the recall
And screwed the vw agent by only paying a quarter of the book time
Which they generally do

There seems to mixed reports about what effect the software update has on performance and reliability.
Some say no issues and the car is the same afterwards.
Some say a slight loss of performance.
Some say big loss of power and fuel consumption is increased significantly.
Some even say the engine goes into limp mode shortly afterwards and the cause is blamed on EGR failure, not the update.
Etc. Etc.
Irrespective, the official position appears to be that there's no rollback of the software once its applied.
What's the opinion here??

My dad had a 2013 passat 1.6tdi and had an egr fault a few days before the emmissions fix, he had it replaced by an independant after the fix as vw were very expensive only to have it fail again 2 months later, the garage replaced it again under warrenty but he got rid of it soon after as it had other problems as well, leaking water pump etc, after reading reports and seeing it on watchdog i wonder if it was the software that made the replacment fail not the egr itself, he has had a letter from vw about the egr warranty extension and after talking to them it sounds as though he may get a refund on the work even though they didnt do the repair and he no longer has the car, we will see what happens.

One guy at our place this morning has been talking about his brother in law and his VW, the dealer has just tried taking £1300 off him for his related EGR problems, the guy refused to pay and it now seems the dealer has reached some agreement.
If the equipment is available and up to date, carryout an 'autoscan' using VCDS keeping a copy of all data, then after dealer visit complete another 'autoscan' and do the comparisons, you should see what all the differences are.

Tricky one from Vw end
I think they would have been better off paying a bigger fine. And leaving it at that. No need for further apologies to the EU/US
Should have said it's not sound retrospect fixes
And both sides just agreed that it wouldn't happen again
In my opinion EU are just as guilty as manufacturers
Allowing them to self certification
With no real checks from there end To confirm

They'll stop when it suits the German government. I doubt very much whether the senior management responsible for this fiasco will face trial. They will pick-off a few Engineers, and the importers, and that will be the end.

As per normal, the lower end of the scale cop the lot whilst the upper management who can afford the expensive legal teams get away !

I dont see the letter has any value......
Imagine, customer has a diagnosis of egr valve failure.....conducted by his local indy dealer....passes findings to VW.... VW say, prove it was our software that caused the failure? I've been on Root Cause Analysis workshops and training.....it can be very difficult to attribute a failure to software......

If it's being used more because of more frequent regen of dpf then it's quite straight foreword? My other half reported fans running on the drive once parked after a 3 mile drive home

A guy i work with who also had a passat told me his fans would come on when he started the engine from cold first thing in the morning, switching the engine off and on again would stop them, never did it before the 'fix'.
