These comparisons make me laugh, there's been lots of them over the years and the facts are mostly lost in translation.
When i was an apprentice, cars still ran on good old 98 RON 4 star (none of this class 1 carcinogenic diesel shit that's killing half of Europe with lung cancer) during that time 95 RON unleaded was phased in. Vauxhall ran a campaign to convert all of their compatible engines to run on unleaded, free of charge.
It was stated by Vauxhall at that time that there would be a slight reduction in engine power and a slight increase in fuel consumption due to the lower octane rating, but that this would be mainly unnoticeable.
My old mans 1.2 Nova lost 4 mpg with no noticeable loss of power, but it pinked like a barsteward, so he ran it on super unleaded when that became available and regained the lost 4 mpg.
Over the years, i ran a 2.0 Cavalier, super unleaded made no difference due to the relatively low CR 9.5:1. A 1.8 Vectra, much improved throttle response at low rpm (under 3000) and 3-4 mpg better fuel consumption 10.5:1 CR.
Currently for commuting to work i run a 11 year old Corsa C 1.2. Super unleaded makes no difference to power or throttle response that i can feel but improves fuel consumption by 5 mpg compared to standard unleaded (not sure of CR, either 10 or 10.5:1) It costs me on average £2.50 per tank full more than regular unleaded, but i get an average of around 55 miles more to the tank full, that would cost me roughly £6-£7 more in regular unleaded.
It's all down to CR and engine design.
Oh, nearly forgot, had an an escort 1.4 CVH lean burn. That didn't like super unleaded, but it went like fook when gassed up at the Jet station!!!

You're not the only one who thought Jet was good stuff. I had a Nova 1.5Td and got from Dublin to Doncaster and back years ago on a full tank of their stuff (£20 in those days) with fuel to spare.
