Yes you are right! "graphing functions" Vast improvement. Network systems for me, I could manage before everything became integrated and ECMs started to talk to each other.

I'd add a Snapon Solus Pro/Ultra to the shopping list, most Japs are on software 12.2 onwards, a scanner/serial data is the primary tool and necessary foundation of diagnostics, codes are so usefully specific. Snapon is a solid package with trouble-shooter software included. I'd put a Snapon scanner top of list. Some of the options are worse than useless. Scopes have been been superbly marketed but premium priced examples should appear someway down a diagnostic shopping list IMO. Some of the viral publicity generated by self appointed experts is pure nonsense. Having said that, a scope is great to have on occasion and economic alternatives do exist: www.autoditex.com/ Hi Rich, whats the stock number for the fuse buddys, I've been looking round for a while, didn't see them in Maplins. Thanks for your reply Tom. Unfortunately the Solus or Modis is way out of my price range (much as i may dream!) the gear i'm currently after is more for home use, work supply the necessary manufacturer specific diagnostic gear (sorry, should have mentioned that in my post) I take your point on scopes though, and as remmington mentioned, he's only using one for real problem jobs, so not necessarily worth spending big money on one for occasional use. Those used Vantage Pros' sure look tempting though! (if only) ;D

If your own jobs on are older cars, what about a Snapon Mt2500, cheap enough with 06/07 software on ebay. Maybe £300 depending what cartridge/condition it is. I know a few techs who love these. Last software release was 9.4 I think, but very rarely see it for sale, that cartridge can cost £300 on its own.
Used Ethos could be better value, might cost around £800 on ebay with 2012 software.
Or what about some laptop software, Vag-com, Vaux, Fiat, Ford and more are all on ebay for anywhere between £20-40, its an option, pay as you go.
EDIT; those small Autel scanners that you mention look useful, I've had a few of the early ones, still use one regularly, the smaller scanners have always impressed me, the flag-ship model had the opposite effect.

Have to admit Tom, i've never used an Mt2500 though there seems to be alot of love for them, are they just a scanner?? precurser to the Ethos?? I've got TIS 2000 on my home lap-top, but, just like the Vauxhall issued version-and currently TIS to Web-the wiring diagrams hardly ever work! I've looked at the various manufacturer specific lap-top software on e-bay and will probably just buy as and when needed. I'm also looking at the Sealey PP100. The scope is no doubt limited in it's ability, but could still be usefull (plus, remmington says power probes' are now ok to use ;D) Thanks again for your input Tom

MT2500 has same programming and actuators as any Snapon with same software version.
9.2 would perform same programming and actuator functions as Solus with 9.2 installed.

Still got my old MT2500 use it as a retro scanner on old VWs/GMs/Fords got all the old connectors and everything, The other lads know to ask for an assist if it hasn,t got a 16 pin DLC
