I posted this query over in the old place on 12th December and got four replies. None of them were a complete answer. However I now realise that most of you were probably over here by then so you may have missed it. Here's the query again: There is a problem* with the timing chains on the N47 diesel engine which is the 177HP version of that engine. The problem lasted from 2007 to 2011. There are numerous horror stories about it on the 'net, just google 13588845-03 and read on. Amid all the stories and advice one question has been asked a few times and never answered: How many or what percentage of cars suffer a problem or failure? Has anyone here got the answer? *The problem seems to be that the teeth of the crankshaft sprocket were too sharp and damaged the timing chain so that it rattled or broke. There were two further complications: the sprocket is welded to the crankshaft so it is necessary to replace the crankshaft just to change the sprocket, and the timing chains are located at the back (clutch end) of the engine so replacement is an engine-out job. I have seen prices on the 'net ranging from £2,000 to £6,000.

What a stupid idea
So it's best just to leave it be really ? And wait for it to go if and when
Sounds like a short motor replacement would be the best option
Is the sprocket a interference press fit?

sorry dont understand the question? what do you want to know!!! I want to know how many or what percentage of these engines suffer timing chain problems? I'm really trying to assess whether I should get rid of my 320d now or chance keeping it. I bought it nearly new and have minded it like a baby, in particular I've changed the oil and filter at half the recommended interval. Just 36k miles on it after three years mostly on long journeys. I'm inclined to think (or hope) that my one might be OK because of the way I use it and keep it. @karl B: I believe the sprocket is welded on but I've never seen one out of the engine.
