On the Vauxhall Astra G, never having removed one so hence why asking, the steering wheel centre cover where the Air Bag is fitted, to change this cover, does it pull off or does the Air Bag need to be removed and then dismantle to fit it?
Anyone every changed them?
You'll know the one I mean that deteriorates around the horn button areas.

Quick search on the astra owners club seems to suggest that whilst you can buy kits to replace the horn push covers, swapping the airbag is preferable. Never done one though, so can't confirm that

When I did mine I did a straight swop with a second hand air bag, plenty on Ebay for £20-30. Seems to be two different ones for the Astra G - yellow or green connector plug, (90437772/90437571 Green plug or 90437286 Yellow plug) make it's pushed fully home or you'll trigger the air bag light on the dash. Air bag is held by two torx head screws in the back of the steering wheel rim, usual safety rules apply! There are covers available but these usually come from Eastern Europe - see here for instructions www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1BF8GOcBK4 , but you're probably better buying a good used one!

The thread I read questioned the quality of the cheapo replacement covers, and concerns about them not opening correctly should the airbag deploy

The YouTube tutorial starts off with a warning that the covers are not made by Opel, but a third party vendor and probably do not have any safety certification. Having seen the full thing it's not something I would attempt, it would worry me that the bag might not operate correctly or even explode in your face

Thank you for the advice. I found a brand new steering wheel cover on Ebay this morning before logging back on here and bought it Anyway I watched the Youtube links supplied here, which is very much appreciated The cars 17 years old two owners from new and never been involved in a serious accident, so hopefully for the remainder of the cars life it should be OK with the new cover fitted.

The thread I read questioned the quality of the cheapo replacement covers, and concerns about them not opening correctly should the airbag deploy I fully endorse this statement and advise against fitting a cover. The consequences of a poorly deployed airbag or debris from a defective cover are not something I would want to be involved in.
