There is conflicting opinions and I can't get to the bottom of it Thanks all The answer is yes and no it depends which route you take. A brand new unit I believe would have to be programmed but if you have your original unit repaired the unit will automatically programme itself to the vehicle upon installation this will only work if the vehicles factory fitted immobiliser system is fully functional. Clearing of fault codes and professional diagnostic checks should be carried out following installation anyway to check no software issues.

New or virginised units, will self code. Sometimes need keys reprogramming to get them to do so. If you get your own unit repaired, then the immo coding will still be correct for your car and no programming needed.
I realise that this is an old post, but the next bit of info could become relevant to some on here.
A secondhand unit does need programming. However, if just plug it in, the car will run fine. This is the same on the modus and clios too. The problem comes when the battery goes flat, or is disconnected. The engine ecu then realises the steering column immo code doesn't match and the immobiliser stays active and won't even allow cranking.
So a garage could be doing a clutch, or even just a simple battery change, put everything back together and it not run. Trying to work out what they have done, when really nothing to do with them. Try explaining that to a customer, especially if the column was changed prior to them buying the car!

Are they repairable ? the motor itself goes, but cos its linked to the immobiliser system its coded. i got burned big time last year, when a key less micra k12 went down,i got a recon unit from my usual repaires, its failed after 3 months, the replacement wouldnt let the car start,it went to nissan in the end who charegd 1400 quid to s+f a new one.# the cutomer paid that amount and i had to give him back 700 quid. i never did get my money back on the faulty recon part!!!

Sounds like a warning notice on the battery would be in order for any ethical garage, at least the car would still be going for a proper fix at a later date.

Is it just the keyless version that has this problem ? I've seen a few go for scrap after becoming non-starters. Key man couldn't sort em. They must have had new column fitted previously. Best place for em really, K12s........hateful things.

There's a K12 close-by in my glen, strange lady drives it, totally out of her comfort zone (high-heels, that sort of thing.... ). Anyway, she mentioned a while back that she had a problem with it, and I earned myself no business when I retorted, "Yes, you've got a problem alright......nobody's going to touch it with a barge-pole this side of Sunderland".

I get the picture. This barge pole did she think you were on about her or the car she might be offended. Ugly things the K12 and the K13 aint much prettier is it.
