Noticed a "bearing type" noise for the last week, and whilst I was changing the front pads, I took the chance to take the rear wheels off and have an inspection, and according to my limited knowledge the O/S/R bearing makes a rattling sound as its rotated, there is no play when the roadwheel is on, but as I say when rotated you can hear this rattle as the wheel turns. These are replaced as a unit, rather than a simple bearing, is this something I can do at home, are there any awkward bolts to get at etc etc.. Ive had a quick browse of the "Haynes" and its not very descriptive....The car has just turned 32000

Should be drums on yours I think , sure it's not just the shoes making contact with the drum Don't remember changing a focus 3 rear wheel bearing before. Yes it's a complete unit affair Should be reasonably straight forward to replace But first are sure it's not the tyres Run your hand around the circumference and feel for any distortion/lifted/stepped tread If your still unsure swap the wheels front to back to see if noise goes. Not saying you don't have a duff bearing but I'd rule out the tyres first

Abs sensor in back might be stuck ? Can't tell you if it comes with it or not

I have removed the roadwheel and drum, and by rotating the hub by the wheel studs, you hear a "rattle" or even "grinding" like there is something loose in the hub, The only thing I didnt do, as you suggest is compare it to the other rear. The roadwheel feels uniform in shape, and there is no "Play" when the wheel is moved as per bearing check etc etc.
I will be checking again tomorrow....

I didn't realise you'd removed drum and felt bearing.
But way you describe suggests it's worn
I normally spin the wheel and feel for any roughness by placing finger on coil spring I find best but works on other rear suspension components

I had a good look with both rear wheels off tonight, BOTH rear hubs (no drum on) sound the same, the N/S drum was dragging slightly. so I adjusted the adjuster "thingy" until the drum rotated freely. Thinking I had solved the issue, took it out for a drive, primarily to check I hadnt cocked the brake feel/operation up, and secondly to see if indeed I had solved the noise issue...I hadnt, Im still of the opinion its the O/S rear bearing, as when loaded up on a left hand turn, the noise increases, but my with my uneducated ears, both HUBS sound very similar in having quiet rattling noise, like a ball bearing in a washing machine....I took a video, so as soon as I figure how to get it off my iPad, ill post it....

Apologies for the sound level, but if you turn up the volume you can hear the noise im not describing very well...

I like the bird-song!
Just a thought, but have you tried this with the ABS sensor removed? That noise sounds just like a rusty ABS ring dragging on the sensor nose, which would change as the bearing shifted during cornering.

The abs sensor is a integral part of the bearing on these?

Apologies for the sound level, but if you turn up the volume you can hear the noise im not describing very well... Weird noise ! And you say both are the same ? Doesn't sound right anyway And you say noise comes and goes depending on which way you steer Next chance I get to look at one at work to compare , I will let you know

Remove the flange assembly, and inspect and rotate it...Noise gone, then the bearing is ok and the sensor could be the cause
