On another forum I told someone to try bump starting their car to prove the engine would run only to be told bump starting an engine with chain driven crank and cams would lead to stretched chains! Old wives tail or truth?

It can make the chain jump a tooth or two.. How? The chain tensioner is normally pressurised with the oil Ie engine running And also a jump start puts more strain on the drivetrain than what a starter motor can

Bump starting any vehicle is best avoided, but especially so with dual mass flywheel fitment.
The starter ring gear is allways fitted to the part of the dual mass that is mounted solid to the crankshaft, so that the starter turns the crank relitively smoothly.
When the vehicle is bump started the turning force comes via the gearbox and clutch, which then has to go through the springy part of the dual mass before reaching the crank. This will tend to turn the crank in a very jerky / springy fashion - inducing chain slip.

How about starting them on the starter in gear when clutch cable snapped? Saw someone do it to a van earlier on and it made me wince

How about starting them on the starter in gear when clutch cable snapped? Times have changed. Once upon-a-time that was the recommended way of getting out of a flood if the engine was stalled. Just put it in first (or reverse), foot off the clutch and keep the starter going. They don't make 'em like that anymore!

Let the clutch out slowly if your bumping something, don,t just side step it. Chains can be a bit dodgy with no pressure in the tensioner. Had to start another Flooded RX8 the other night, got it going on the starter though
