Watching Car SOS this week I saw Fuzz take an interesting short cut on cam belt fitting. By slicing the old belt in half along its entire length. Removing the outside half and fitting the new belt along side it. Then cut the reaming half off and slide the new belt all the way on. This is probably old news to most of you on here but I'd not seen this done before. Does anyone else do this and are there any draw backs to this method?

Drawbacks off the top of my head:
1: If the new belt isn't the right length/width and you don't notice before starting, you're stuffed
2: You're assuming the old belt was timed up correctly in the first place.
3: How does it work with regards to the tensioner? You can't replace that while keeping the belt under constant tension IMO

That's industry best practice right there, saves tensioning new belt correctly

And another thing: On something like an Alfa twin spark with a camshaft variator the inlet cam can move independently of the pulley, rendering the whole rigmarole meaningless.
The only engine I'd even entertain doing this on would be something like an old 1.6 montego, but considering they're non-interference you might as well just time it up properly.

What car was it eddypeck ? Skyline R33 Yep that was the one. Surprised me to see this. But I guess you'd have to assume he'd check it was appropriately timed and tensioned. I think the point was just so you don't have to worry about lock tools.
