Hi all.
Just joined to hopefully gain knowledge and experience.
I am NVQ qualified but have never worked in the trade (paid) just volunteered to do my papers. I think the main reason for doing the NVQs (levels 1,2 and 3) is to learn how to repair my car, to save on labour costs etc. I did the papers between 1999 and 2002.
I do have a tool cabinet with chest on it (Halfords Industrial) and a variety of tools like Sealey, Laser (engine timing pins), Draper Expert, Halfords Professional socket sets and spanners including brake flare spanners.
Also Sykes Pickavant ACR4 with IMAP pod and IKEYS. Really useful tool.
Ultimately would like a Picoscope scope, so saving the pennies.
Overall I am a competent mechanic, very methodical but not fast enough to earn a living from the game.

Hiya mate Gosh you have a lot of kit for someone who's not in the trade! What do you do for a living then? Some of us on here are mechanics in the trade, some DIY and others are retired or hobby car repairers! Oh there is a Gardner on here as well!

Hiya mate Gosh you have a lot of kit for someone who's not in the trade! What do you do for a living then? Some of us on here are mechanics in the trade, some DIY and others are retired or hobby car repairers! Oh there is a Gardner on here as well! Cheers mate! I'm pretty much office based nowadays and just repair and service friends and family cars. I don't miss skinned knuckles every day that's for sure! Gone are the days where I significantly boosted the sales of Swarfega lol Pretty gutted really cos I'm buying tools that I used to have but sold when I finished with cars. Doesn't seem like much has hanged from 13 years ago, shocks, drop down links / anti roll bars etc. I think for me the main change is with diagnostics and gaining knowledge of the various systems ie. Bosch, Lucas etc. in my day it was pretty much Magneti Marelli, Magneti Marelli. I've recently been fleeced by a garage who failed my car on split outer CV boots (both sides). I put new discs and pads on the other week to discover the boots were still split and perished, so I'm gunning for them and involving Trading Standards if need be. I don't mind the odd split knuckles but not for me every day now. Not sure if it's my age lol. At least if I do the jobs myself, I know it's do properly. Yeah, probably overkill for non trade but they will pay for themselves fairly quickly
