Peugeot 206,2004 rear swing arm needle roller bearing

The above car has failed the NCT TEST (Irish MOT) on the above issue

Any idea what this is like to do. Where exactly is the needle roller, is it where the main axle enters the arm. The arm has two rubber mounts one each end and the axle looks like it passes through the arm at the pivot point if that makes sense.

I put a bar on it today and could find any movement. There are also two torsion like bars that run the width of the car and again no movement.

This is a common problem on these cars - if they are bad enough the wheel begins to lean in at the top and comes in contact with the body ; in the early stages it just happens on bumps so you may find some marks/signs of contact in the wheelarch .
I've changed the axles in a few of them some time ago ; it appears that if they have been worn for a while the shaft gets damaged and its a waste of time fitting new rollers .
There is plenty of info available on the web and even some 'how tos' - you can get kits I think and fit them yourself ; I didn't try repairs - just got a good secondhand .
Good ones are scarce - and I have recently seen reconditioned ones for sale on DoneDeal with a warranty for 300 euro I think . I paid around 150 for the SH ones I think .

I have fitted kits on a couple of cars - the last was a Citroen Xsara with a similar setup - and the job was not too painful at-all. The main thing to watch in the online "how-to's" is the assembly of the two sides of the torsion beams to one another. Most kits come with a pretty good explanation in paper form. I'll try to dig-out where I got the last kit from, as that was comprehensive and a doddle to work with.

How can you test for failure here. There is no tyre wear so don't suspect tyre leaning in and no marks against arch or strut etc. I couldn't get any movement using tyre levers with the car jacked and wheels hanging.
Any idea how long job should take and can it be done on the floor with standard trolley jacks

The last customer we did this job for, provided us an exchange recon unit with grease nipples fitted to it! (not sure where it came from thou!)

I have seen plenty of sick Peugeots with the rear wheels canted in at the top of the wheel.

Normally they wear the tyres at an alarming rate.

If there's no excessive movement surely it's a pass and advise at most

If the roller bearings are gone on one side then the gap between the top of the tyres and the body should be obvious. When jacked up hold tyre top and bottom ,push on top pull on bottom. Have never seen replacment bearings to work , as said before by the time you notice the wear the shaft is too far gone. So second hand,repair kit or recon.

My problem is I don't know how they have diagnosed this problem as I can't feel any movement at all. I have rocked and levered and can get nothing and again no tyre wear which would be the obvious signs. The problem is you can't speak to them (NCT) and I feel this customer is going to spend totally unnecessary money on a repair that isn't warranted. The car is 11 years old but is mint and always serviced on the button of mileage or time.

How do you appeal or can't you?

Get someone else to check it and if they agree it's ok then bring it back for retest and if it passes then make some noise

Try testing iron the ground , get someone to rock the wheel while your underneath

Difficult to check when not excessive wear/looseness, the torsion bars force..

I think they check the suspension by putting the wheel on a moving plate and monitoring it on their computer.

I had to change a front bottom ball joint on a Laguna that failed this test. I got a second opinion and neither of us could find any play using the usual bars etc. However, when the old ball was removed we found play in it.

...as for an appeal: check on any Irish car forum, it's a waste of time and money.

for them to fail it there must be free play in the bearings if you jack it up you should be able to feel it. if you catch them early the bearings can be replaced but if left it damages the tube and you need a new axle but the labour may be quiet a lot. try imaxles.co.uk for replacement I have used them and are very good.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes they check this with vibrating type plate. I got another mechanic to check and he also agrees no sign of wear. Appeal is just not an option they are a faceless organisation. I won't be doing job myself but plan is to do bearing and hope no shaft damage etc which I doubt considering we can't find movement. Had a look at job on you tube and fair bit of work involved but I guess not too bad either.
