Being a new petrol head my son wants to paint the front grille of his Fiesta MK6 a gloss black, as its a plastic part, what prep/primer and paint should he be using...and if he does make a presentable job of it, would a couple of coats of clear laquer provide a good protection and a gloss finish.

Plastic primer, colour of choice, then matt or gloss laquer(if required),build up the layers and flatten each coat for best finish or why not try a wrap or plastic dip

We asked a local wrapper , and he said it's not the best of parts for wrapping due to the small honeycomb sections, but plastic dipping is something worth a thought cheers mate

Laquer out of an aerosol isn't much good as its a 1k product so the build up is poor and doesn't nretain its shine. 2 pack laquer is high build and does do a nice job and keeps its shine for years.
A good aerosol adhesive for all surfaces (Upol do one) or a specific plastic primer then a colour coat of choice (base coat) then on with the clear coat or laquer. Failing that you could try a gloss black aerosol with a few coats then compound/polish to bring back to a nice shine.

I have just repainted the boot spoiler on my bora as the laquer was peeling off and the adhesive had given up so it was loose on the bootlid, all i did was strip all the old laquer off like clingfilm using a razer blade, filled any imperfections with normal filler primed it with grey plastic primer that i already had in the garage (available anywhere though) then after few days applied a few coats of the colour followed about 10 mins later with a few coats of laquer all out of an aerosol can (color had to be mixed up but only cost about £13 for 400 ml which was plenty) originaly it did look a bit rough but after a wet sand using 2500 grade paper and soapy water followed by a polish its almost as good as the original finish,it was quite time consuming but im really pleased with the result plus it only cost me about £30.
