Yes it is, Helios Blue 3 dr 8v GTI "one in ten million" campaign edition. Totally standard, original and complete with loads of history. I contacted VW History department for a bit more info. and found out there were 16500 made during the summer of 1988, 8000 stayed inland (not sure if that means Germany or mainland Europe? This email was from a German Professor) and 8500 went for export worldwide. Not all of the 16500 were GTI and there were various colour schemes, interiors and specs. for the world market. But the UK ones were all GTIs and came in only 3 metallic colours. There were only 900 of each colour (Helios Blue, Oak Green and Metalic Black) so the UK got less than 3000 of the 8500 export vehicles. They came in 8v or 16v and 3 or 5 door so there's 4 possible configurations. If it was an even split (which I'm sure it wasn't precisely, but hey-ho), that's 900 split 4 ways equals just 225 cars of this exact spec. and that was 27 years ago. So take out those rotten, crashed, written off, traded in and victims of scrap-age scheme or just plain modified beyond recondition and I can't imagine there's too many left. Now who's the Anorak? .... What I forgot to mention is it was last on the road in 2007, whilst runs it has no brakes and it's totally rotten underneath... but given it's rarity an potential future classic value, my plan is to save it if I can. I'd like to do a full nut and bolt rebuild and keep it as standard and original as I can. It also has the reg plate JAY, which is my surname. As you may know you can only transfer a number plate from an MOTed car, or one that's been SORN within the last 12 months. So if I can't save the car then the number plate is lost too and the same plate, just a couple digits out (E 88 5 JAY) is available for £700. Waiting for the BMW to go, then a few jobs to catch up on around the house then I can clear the garage out to get this in for a winter strip down and assessment. Most repair panels are available so it's not too daunting but until I get it back to a shell I can't really tell. Worse case I'll easily double my money splitting it for parts, but that would be a shame.

Ha...that's just a bit of surface rust....clean off with a Brillo pad will that....add a bit of zinc primer, a lick'o'paint and it'll be as good as new..... Seriously good luck with that... Look forward to seeing the bodywork rebuild...

You're right it's not rust, it's a whacking great hole and the entire underneath is like it. The pic actually makes it look ok, lol.
