A friend of mine has a 2000 Bora 1.9 Tdi which now has 213K mls up . I maintain it for him and its due for its annual NCT shortly. A Gates timing belt kit and water pump were fitted at 166K in Nov 2011 so they now have about 47K done . What is considered the safe interval for these belts by those who are familiar with them ? Would it be advisable to change it before the test due to it being revved for the emissions test . Opinions appreciated .

I *think* these are 4 years or 60k, whichever comes first. That being the case, I'd be tempted to pull the top cover off and check it isn't going loose and hasn't started cracking

Nate is correct so I would advise visual inspection of the cambelt and check the water pump for signs of sweating.

OK guys , thanks for those ideas . Will check them out in the next few days - so any cracks on the belt or any sign of coolant around the pump will mean a new kit and pump . Car has served him well for 8 yrs and looks capable of a few more so won't take chances .

assuming its the same as the sdi, the belts are nice and easy to do
