Hi everyone. I think the ECU has gone in my friends car. Can you just get one out of a scrap car and plug it in?

Hi everyone. I think the ECU has gone in my friends car. Can you just get one out of a scrap car and plug it in? Have you tried repairing it yet? Most ECU's are held together by security screws, but you can buy a cheap kit of driver bits on a certain auction site for a few pounds. If the worst comes to the worst, a drill will remove the screws, and you can use a self-tapping in-place when it's time to rebuild the ECU. You will need some stout screwdrivers to prise the case open, as quite often they have a sealant around the outside. If you are not careful, the lid will fold in half, which is a bit of a giveaway if you are trading the car in afterwards. Once inside the ECU, it's usually a fairly simple job to trace where the fault has occurred, assuming the drill didn't slip too badly taking the lid off. If you need any further advice, please ask, and I'll oblige with some more tit-bits.
