Does anyone know what the timing belt interval is on these? It's a 1.8 16v petrol. And will I need any special tools? Or it is a line up the marks job

What year would help and what kind of driving does the car do adverse etc. There are two types as well, one with a single centre crankshaft pulley bolt and one with 4 smaller crankshaft pulley bolts. Give me some more info and I will help you.

It's a Y reg, and mostly just local use. Might be irrelevant anyway, as it has apparently just bombed the mot on rust. Have to see how bad it is and if it's worth doing

having now seen the fail sheet, it's not actually that bad. wants a number plate bulb, wiper blade and a new sill on the n/s. testing hammer "found" a hole about 10" long at the front end of it. i suspect that by the time you take it back to sound metal, it will probably e nearly twice that. sill only a few hours work to sort properly though, so not too bad. she was quoted £140 to throw a patch over the top of it and spoon on some blackjack. probably worth doing it properly though, or it'll just want more welding next year.
any alarm / immob issues with these when you pull the battery off?

I wouldn't labour too much over the welding and leave the battery hooked up. Thinking back to one of remmingtons recent observations, theres not much worth saving these days, least of all a 1.8 picasso. I'd honestly just zap a piece over the rot and lather it in shultz. As for the timing belt if it sounds ok its not worth touching IMO.

The owner is family, and can't afford to replace the car and would be stuffed without it. I know it hasn't had a belt in at least the last 4 years

I know it hasn't had a belt in at least the last 4 years Cambelt intervals for that engine is 75,000 miles or 10 years which ever comes first. So if it has been changed in the last 4 years IMO it should be ok. Worth a check when next Service due.

For what it's worth I haven't disconnected a better your alternator for years, always used a surge protector designed for welding when carrying out welding repairs. A lot less hassle than re learning ecu's and finding long gone radio codes etc.

Last one of the cambelts I did at work was a proper cock, from memory you need a tool to hold the tension off the tensioner. A tool to reset the tensioner before inserting the first tool I mentioned and also the crank is not keyed so thank feck I also locked the flywheel with the locking pin. Could well have been pins for the camshaft pulleys too.
The air con pipes if fitted are totally in the way of the allen keys that hold the cambelt cover on I had to use a small allen key and a couple of the bolts I was lucky to get a quarter turn on them at a time and that usually meant dropping the allen key and having to then retrieve it.
I was later told by a mate that removing the engine mount helps as you can move engine position, however there was no mention of this on autodata, the book time given was absolute b*llocks, deffo not one of my favourite jobs. Oh and the bottom pulley bolt was mega mega tight iirc.

Thanks studabear, that's what I needed to know. If it was like a vw one I'd just do it, but that's way to involved for a freebie. I'll make sure she knows it needs doing and point her at a mechanic!
I haven't got one of those surge protectors, and I so rarely do welding on vehicles that aren't completely stripped out I really can't justify getting one at the moment. Battery off it is. Aftermarket radio as I recall, so code for that shouldn't be a problem. Just not sure if there's any immob resetting that needs to be done after having the battery removes for an hour or so?
