It's probably injector knock

Is the lynx the tddi motor with belt and chain?
If it was engine related you would have thought engineers would have found something, any power loss, excess smoke or just the knock?

Yes it is 1.8 lynx engine
What year? Injectors can give rough symptoms of engine knock

I'll go with the injector also but since it's a long shot,a couple of years back on a connect same engine ,same diagnosis, same routine inc injector change, turned out to be a snapped carrier bolt rattling in the head from previous work done.

unless it's your phone, that sounds more like a rattle not a knock, at camshaft speed so i'd be looking at the top end from blowing injectors to cam carrier caps cracked, little ends, cracked valve buckets servo pump. the list goes on

All auxiliary driven stuff seems quiet. Always stressful when this car goes wrong as it's the family hack and the wife isn't patient Might have to bite the bullet and take it to ford.

Well after half an hour or so of running its unbelievably loud. I took it to a well respected local mechanic who says its most certainly terminal.
Need to decide what to do with it really, probably buy a cheap run around for now and pop a second hand lump in it, or just sell as-is.
Genuinely gutted. Its been cherished and wanted for nothing, and has still been nothing but massive bill after massive bill, nearly 13 months MOT on it too!!

Why don't you pull it apart and find out what's wrong

Definitely worth taking off the cam cover to see what's in there. (Sounds like an old push-rod engine gone bad!)
