I did try this. Worked quite well, but did take a while. I did all the tinware off one of my stationary engines

I did try this. Worked quite well, but did take a while. I did all the tinware off one of my stationary engines Pics? Will have a rummage thru my photobucket at the weekend. Too much hassle on phone

oops! forgot about this. this was a test i did on a bit of iron/steel that i dug up in the veg patch. forgot to take a pic as it was to start with. in the 1st pic it had only been going for a couple of minutes. i didn't measure quantities, it was just a generous "some" soda cristals in a bucket of warm water. the test piece was put in using just a spare offcut of steel from the pile of useful. i used 2 12v car batteries in series to try and speed up the process a bit... the last pic shows it after a day or so. all the soft flaky rust gone, and the surface now a dull charcoal color. i can't find the pics of the tinware from my engine. i didn't bother removing the paint before i stuck it in there, just cleaned a bit off the corner for the jump lead to attach to. where there was rust under the paint, the paint came away very quickly. where there was paint on sound metal it stayed stuck. took very little sanding to have it ready for paint EDIT: would help if i added the pics!
