Last time York flooded badly was way back in 98 I think. We got caught out at Rowntrees park when the river burst its banks while we were there and had to drive through 4ft of water to get back onto the main road.
We were in a Rover 827 at the time and it was fine, a nice steady speed and a wake created in front and she just sailed through it. The only issue that was thrown up was the brake pads had to be renewed due to water damage. Other than that there wasn't a problem.
It's all down to speed and keeping a bow wave going in front so the water is pushed forwards. But many think their cars are really boats.

Its not all down to that steady speed and bow wave though. A lot depends where the air inlet is sited; some are low down. And of course the major electrics etc. Also its important to keep the revs a bit high and steady and control speed with clutch or brake. Dropping the revs and allowing water in the exhaust will halt progress. Cars arent boats ;D

And make sure you wear goggles and flippers, although it does make pushing the pedals a bit difficult
