Thankfully nobody was seriously hurt.

The ship did not release any pollutants into the water as it burned, according to the shipping company. Typical media reporting though, innit? If pollutants had been released (and who is to say there wasn’t …really? ) it would not help the Green Party in their quest for world dominance of green energy use….

The wording was quite careful;
The ship did not release any pollutants into the water whilst it burned.
Two things spring to mind with the statement above; The ship was not loaded with lithium batteries, it was powered by heavy-oil, and therefore it would be interesting to find-out what pollutants were released from the cargo. Also, whilst the ship is burning, those pollutants that may have been released are being emitted to the air above the water-line, not just seeping into the water.
Just a thought or two....

Is it true a burning lithium battery will go thru steel plate and concrete like a thermal lance?

Is it true a burning lithium battery will go thru steel plate and concrete like a thermal lance? I think it will, but I'm not sure whether the cooling-effect of bilge/sea-water against the outside of a steel plate would be enough to resist the intense heat from a lithium fire?
