Secretary of State for Transport - Grant Shapps.
Today at a meeting to address the "cost of living crisis" - put this back on the table again!
Citing the Covid MOT extension was a success!
As reported on CH4 news this evening.
-----------------
This debate is very much "alive and kicking" in Northern Ireland - due to the lack of Government testing centres.

Current facts in NI speak for themselves
"Cars inspected on their MOT expiry date have an average failure rate of 32.4 per cent, which increases incrementally each month to 41.9 per cent when inspected seven months after the due date."
UK looks higher
"According to data from the DVSA, around 40% of cars fail their MOT at the first attempt. However, many of the faults leading to a fail can be avoided with regular checks and maintenance. Data from the DVSA detailing the top reasons why cars of all ages fail an MOT test.6 Apr 2020"

It’s a distraction/deflection from partygate, Angela Rayners’ alleged Sharon Stone tribute act
It’s also a way to say “we” (the government” saved most of the general public that owns a car 3years or over £50 every other year as modern cars don’t go wrong 😂😂. The fact that it cost them nothing, will cost some lives & some jobs is part of the acceptable equation

I really can't understand why Grant Shapps still has a job. Just need to look at the "ill thought out" new highway code rules that his office dreamt up, to realise how incompetent he is !

It's another easy way for the govt to get vehicles off of the road. Average Joe just drives the thing until it breaks/won't start. Mot after 2 years writes the thing off. Then it's off to China..Cynical? Maybe

Imagine how much tax would be generated if private sales were outlawed and you had to have a license to sell cars / white goods etc?
A bit like a waste carrier and scrap collection? Electronic transactions only

Correct me if I am being silly - but CO2 is taxable now?

And every time the people buy and move up the chain tax is involved and pollution decreases? You are not dumb - you get it! Correct me if I am being silly - but CO2 is taxable now? Yes it is based on CO2 emissions (g/km) for the first year rate then reverts to the standard rate from second year onwards for vehicle tax rates for petrol and diesel cars from April 2022. Just to add that some people are still not aware than any new owner of a car that costs more than £40,000 have to pay an additional annual supplement of £355 for five years – adding up to £1,775 in total. Example below of what you'll pay for a car costing more than £40,000 during years two to six. Fuel type Standard annual rate Additional rate Total annual payment Petrol/diesel £165 £355 £520 So owner one keeps the car for 3/4 years and sells it but the above premiums are still in force until the vehicle is seven years old then it will fall down to the Annual rate applicable at the time the vehicle is seven years old. Cars registered before April 2017 tax band is dependant on their CO2 emissions. I hope I've made it so people can understand it.
