I'm idly considering getting a MK3 Focus in the future to replace my MK2 1.8 Petrol Focus, which has given many years fine service.
The problem is the options on the MK3 For petrol engines seem a bit limited, so I thought I'd ask which ones are the most sensible/least trouble.
From what I can gather, the options are
1.0 Ecoboost 1.5/1.6 Ecoboost 1.6 TI-VCT (looks to be auto only) 2.0 Ecoboost/ST
From what I gather the 1.0/3-pot ecoboost doesn't have the best reliability reputation due to plastic coolant piping near the turbo and the issues with self-shredding wet belts at higher mileages. My folks had a 2013 Fiesta ecoboost and while the engine had plenty of power to shift the car it was very unrefined at low engine speeds and reminded me of something like an old 2CV or fiat 126. Are the focus ecoboosts any better?
As for the 1.5/1.6 and 2.0 ecoboost 4-pots, do these suffer with the same issues as the 3-pots when it comes to cooling pipework and wet belts?
I'm avoiding the diesels as I'm not sure my usage pattern (lots of sub 20 mile work interspaced with 40+ every now and again) will do a DV5/DV6 diesel any good, and also the long warm up times are no fun in winter.

I'm a big fan of the mk1 and the mk2 was a solid car, I just don't think the mk3 is all that special (unless you can afford an RS). I think for an everyday driver with a good reliable petrol engine I would be looking elsewhere to be honest. I've recently sold my Honda Civic and I'm looking for something more sensible (it was a Type R). I can't decide what to get really, maybe a hybrid for me next probably a Honda Civic again but I like the previous generation Toyota RAV 4 Hybrid a lot too. I've had Ford Transits for a long time at work and I worked for a Ford dealer in my distant past and like the brand, but the latest Transit Custom they sent me just isn't built all that well to be honest!!

We had facelift MK3 Focuses at work so I've done a fair few miles in them, but they all had the 1.5 TDCi diesel units and I prefer petrols.
I find the focus is about right size wise for what I need and has a better quality interior compared to the Fiestas of the same vintage. I've also gone through the MK1 and MK2 focus and would be happy with a MK3.
As for swapping brands, there are Toyota and Honda dealers within reasonable distance, however its so much easier to get service and upgrade parts for your average ford.

It's true that parts are cheaper and easier to get for Fords despite Honda and Toyota being built in the UK, would you like to know which parts beyond regular service/brakes/wiper blades and tyres I had to buy for my fifteen year old Civic Type R? Nothing!! Not a single part beyond regular maintenance, but if you heard it rev to 8000rpm you would imagine the motor would need a rebuild every 18 months, I still can't understand how they do it and yet European manufacturers can't make a timing chain last longer than five years 😉
