I've found the Petrol Prices app very useful when on a long journey and you've got a few choices where to stop for dino juice.
On my way back from Doninton Park I stopped at a random Asda in Wolstanton (just outside Stoke) which had E10 for 141.7
That was quite a bit better than the next fuel stop I saw, which was Crewe services at 169.9!

Based on 50 litres that’s a £14ish saving, inconvenience zero as Crewe services is tucked away off the main road too

Indeed, and the Asda was on a shopping park, so it had a 24hr Starbucks next door. Deffo one to remember for next time!

Service stations on main routes - prime real estate and big prices for fuel/food/drinks. Detour always more scenic and cheaper...Other option is fuel up before you go and take a thermos flask. Wee anywhere....

Apart from Gloucester and Tebay services which are worth stopping at if you are passing. Prices are no more expensive than other nice food markets and they do stock some lovely produce. Good kids play areas too.
Why can’t all motorway services be like Gloucester and Tebay?

Looks lovely, and nice to see them sourcing products from the locals. A proper community

Good kids play areas too. Why can’t all motorway services be like Gloucester and Tebay? Gloucester, Tebay and Cairn Lodge (just south of Glasgow on the M74) are all run by the same firm (Westmorland), so all are very pleasant places to stop. They also run a Truckstop at J38 of the M6 to cater for the HGV traffic. As for why other services can't be like that? The short answer is money, the long answer is Money and location. Tebay is smack in the middle of the section of the M6 that forms the eastern edge of the Lake District National Park and is not far from the North York Moors National Park. Its also the site of the only Tesla supercharger high speed car charger in the whole Lake District, so they are guaranteed lots of high-spending tourism traffic, while Gloucester and Cairn Lodge are on the tourist route from the English Midlands and Scottish Central Belt heading South, but no so close that you're not ready for a bit of a break by the time you get there.

£1.39/l for diesel at Costco yesterday... Thankfully the tank on the current LR product is slightly smaller but gives a slightly better range

I have used Tebay Northbound from the first month it was opened, and that's going back a bit now..... I have never begrudged filling-up with fuel there; I know it's a load more expensive than it has to be, but it helps them cover their costs for all the other things. I remember it before the duckpond was added onto the side of the restaurant.
Tebay Southbound is a newer outfit, and it has never, quite, had the same feel about it; the food, everything is never quite as good. No reason why (maybe the management is slightly different?), but I'm never quite as happy with that side, but I still stop there everytime. For me, Tebay is a useful position, as it's dinner-time going South on my main commute to Hampshire a couple of times a year, and it's lunchtime going North on the way home. Whatever times those are!!
If I was less lazy, I would use the hotel-access overpass to change sides of motorway, but it wouldn't feel the same then.....

The secret with motorway services fuel prices is that most of the folks who use them don't actually pay the price on the sign, but rather use fuel cards which pay a pre-arranged rate. As for Tebay south vs North, the difference to me is the southbound building is smaller, and you end up queueing a bit more, but otherwise I've not seen much in the way of a significant difference with service and food quality. The once annoyance I have with the place is that it doesn't stock Irn Bru, which reminds me my Scottish holiday either hasn't properly started or is now coming to an end!

Wee anywhere.... The issue I have is that out here in the sticks fuel is more expensive than in town. For example my local garage is 154p for E10 whereas 30 miles up the road its 144p. However, what I have started doing is building up a list of convenient supermarkets and cheaper stations to stop at near/reasonably near main routes. For example there's a Tesco fuel station just off the M74 at Lesmahagow (M74 J10). Its very keenly priced and easy to access. It also gives you a chance to swap from the Motorway route south to the B7078 and B7076 which are the old A-road route from Glasgow to Gretna that was retained when the motorway was built. Other examples are knowing which retail parks are easy to get to and are quiet early/late on a sunday, such as Sainsburys near Lawley just off the M54.
