My sister's mother in law is after something to replace her 2005 K12 micra automatic. Her stipulations are
1) it's got to work like a "proper" auto with creep and engine/box based hill hold, rather than being held by auto hill hold brakes
2) its got to be a small car (fiesta sized or smaller)
Any suggestions for a suitable car? Current suggestions are the Vw Up/Skoda Citigo

Current suggestions are the Vw Up/Skoda Citigo -------------- I use Vw Ups and Skoda Citigos for courtessy cars (loaners). Manual ones eat clutches - and the auto's are the worst autobox I have ever used in a car - lurching from one gear to another - over revving between gear changes. Apart from the above I would recommend a VW UP - Seat Mii - Skoda Citigo. They are about as good as a three cylinder car is gonna get.

Are the Ups an automated manual box? Do they "creep" like a standard auto or do you have to rely on auto hold brakes/handbrakes for hill starts etc?

The UPs are a "DSG" type box - they are a manual with an Automatic Mechatronic unit. I have only driven a low spec UP with an autobox - the higher spec ones like my Passat Highline estate DSG car - may have electronic "hillstart" - This works well. Is very good. You need to drive one - to see how bad they are - "an auto UP". Engine/build wise these little VAG cars are superb. It is just the clutch mech is of a very bad design on a manual.

Yaris or Jazz auto, or hybrid even? I've tried selling them on a Yaris hybrid as my mum has one and it ticks all the boxes, problem is she thinks its too big. I've tried explaining that all the smaller cars have rubbish automatic boxes but its taking a while for them to realise this

Hers is a 2017 proper/full hybrid, so while you can set it to run only on the battery its only for very short distances and low speeds, and if you're climbing a hill or plant your foot it automatically starts the engine.

The Jazz is a good motor in a manual version no idea what the Auto's are like? I can only suggest somebody goes with your mother-in-law and drives a few auto variants from various manufacturers to try out then it's her decision and can't blame anybody if she's not happy.

Update: Said sister's Mother in law decided on a Kia Picanto in the end and they managed to source a 2017 example which she'll hopefully enjoy.

Easy solution is to just go EV with a Renault Zoe, all those small autoboxes are total bags of sh*t I'm afraid

Honda Jazz Hybrid would be my pick then. Proven system and nice enough build quality.
