Just bought an old vito that is somewhere between old van and Camper. It's a project buy. The van goes into all gears before engine is started. Once started it will go in forward gears and just grabs. I'm thinking clutch is goosed but strangely it won't go into reverse at all once engine is running. What do you reckon clutch or is it something more sinister.

Presumably a hydraulic clutch?
If so next step get that gearbox out and examine the clutch components.

Yep sounds like clutch drag to me- reverse is worst as there’s no synchro on reverse to help force it in. Can you put it in reverse, clutch down and then start it? That would prove reverse works OK - but your symptoms are 100% knackered clutch (hydraulics or physical clutch).

Thanks for the advice. Sorry I posted this in wrong section 😕. I'm thinking clutch. I'm waiting to get the van delivered this week. So will try starting in reverse.

Which engine is it? If it’s 2.8 VR6 VW and they also use the VW gearbox they are known for the clutch fork cracking and bending
