My facelift MK2 focus has clear rear light clusters, so takes orange indicator and red stop/tail bulbs in that unit, however the front indicators have an orange filter, so take (I assume) a standard clear P21 bulb.
Now, I know that putting a clear (front) indicator in a rear cluster would be a fail (as its clearly not orange), however would I have any issues if I put an orange bulb behind an orange filter? I'm assuming that if it was bright enough it wouldn't be an issue?

IMHO, if there's any doubt about the effectiveness of any of the lights on the car, I'd replace the bulb with the appropriate type....
I took a Fiesta for MoT once and the tester said that the front indicator bulb, which had an Orange coloured glass, was of insufficient brightness...(his opinion not mine...but his counts! )
I thought he was being picky....barsteward...Still for the cost of a bulb...and the price of a pass certificate...

It was more a hypothetical thing, as I found recently that my cheapo replacement bulb kit (Home Bargains) only has a clear P21 bulb in it, and I had an orange one play up while on holiday (fortunately removal/replacement sorted it). I was merely wondering if I stuck an orange bulb in would it work well enough in the front indicators to pass an MOT (I've got some proper orange bulbs now anyway)

Never ever assume White for white and orange for orange. The orange through orange won't emit enough light

We had a blown indicator bulb whilst holidaying in Ireland a couple of years ago. I needed a yellow bulb but only had a clear one. Undoubtedly we could have got a yellow bulb from somewhere, but as we were on holiday and too busy enjoying ourselves I just bodged it: I got my wife’s red nail varnish, painted the spare clear bulb with a thin coat, and fitted it. It worked really well: it looked yellow!
I did sort it out properly with the correct bulb once we got home.

From the ones that i've seen, the amber coloured bulbs have offset locating pins, & the clear ones are directly opposite one another. So it shouldn't really be possible to exchange them unless you change the bulb holder. Although they can be forced to fit in an emergency. But if you need to, the paint can easily be scraped off, or a clear one could be painted with "amber light" paint .

You can get opposite pin orange bulbs as well as then offset 581 orange bulb.
I've filed a pin off a orange 581 that the film had flaked off in order to use it as a reverse bulb. 😀

In what can only be called a surprising bit of common sense, it seems that despite having orange filters on the front indicators Ford uses orange bulbs all round.

What is even more surprising, given that this is a Ford, is that orange bulbs are much more expensive to buy & replace than clear bulbs. It doesn't seem likely that this has ever got past the Ford Cost & Weight Control Team.......a few more pence on each corner of the car, they would be having a fit by now!!!
This is the same company that renamed the Consul in the 1970's, so that they really could sell their Grandad.....

They're the red ones that are annoyingly not stocked by everyone and seem to cost the national debt of Movldova
