Are they really that bad or would a strict oil service regime , say HALF the ,mileage or time interval that of the FORD recommend keep these engines in good nick ? We service ours using Ford genuine oil and filter every 7500 miles / 6 months. The turbo feed pipes were replaced as previously described about 18 months ago. The car has 110,000 miles on the clock and is driving well. Fuel consumption just under 50mpg in mixed driving. No oil being consumed between services. One thing I will add that I think it's an awful shame these motors are marginal on servicing. As engines go, the drive quite well and give good MPG and are not that noisy on the move. DMF's seem pretty solid as well. I will be posting later about a minor intake hose leak though...it's the only blot on this car's copybook of late. Need to get pics off the phone first....

Rather than start another DV6 thread, hope y'all don't mind if I jump in with a couple of related questions .. Car's a Focus 2008, DV6, non-dpf. Not showing any outward signs of problems yet but I'd rather do some preventative maintenance than wait for it to go titsup. I want to get the sump off and clean out or replace the pickup, replace the turbo feed/return pipes, and change the banjo filter, just want to plan the job first and not get into one of those jobs you wished you never started.... First obstacle is the front pipe with cat, is it pretty straightforward to remove? Any gotchas? Secondly, is it worth taking the oil cooler off and cleaning it out? And then the sump pick-up... worth replacing (its about 35 quid), or is it cleanable? By cleaning I mean attack with a can of brake cleaner. And when refitting the retaining bolts are 12Nm and the one is 9Nm, but should I blue threadlock them? OK to reuse the old ones? fanks! The front cat comes out no problem at all, 16mm clamp at turbo, two 15mms at the flange oppo end and two 10mms at suuport bracket. Rip the lot out. Replace sump as it will probably leak, pick up pipe ideally but they will clean up. Loctite as standard on pick up pipe bolts so bash some more on. Replace banjo with filter in it. Remove oil cooler ( four 8mm bolts but drain coolant) clean it out but also check vacuum pump filter (13mm and a 10mm) Look into peugeot parts for it, a customer supplied their own parts for this job the other day and im sure they were cheaper and banjo doesnt have filter in so wont block up with the first bit of dirt.

Cheers monkey, lucky you mentioned coolant, coulda made quite a puddle there :-D
The cat/front pipe was my main worry so I'll just get stuck in when the weather's a bit nicer. Could take a while then... I've priced a few bits up with Ford already and they seem pretty reasonable, sump 32.88, cat exhst clamp 6.84, feed pipe bolt with banjo 7.05... and all a bit cheaper if you order in advance and they do it as a normal stock item.
I think I've seen KB recommend leaving the gauze on. The Haynes manual also recommends removing it, but I've had a look at slightly out of date Ford ETIS service bulletins and didn't see anything there about removing it either. I guess its better to have a bit of carbon on the guaze than it finding its way to turbo bearings maybe.

Definitely the exhaust clamps and the sump have to be replaced because they go out of shape once tightened and allow exhaust gases / oil to escape if reused.

The filter is very fine so will trap the particles, restrict the supply of oil to the turbo and ruin the bearings due to no lubrication.
Abit of minute carbon is more likely to pass through the turbo and get trapped by the oil filter..

Unless you start all the bolts by hand and go careful winding them back in, they start to go tight!
Never broke any mind, can imagine thats going to be a right ball ache!

We have got a 1.6 HDi Pug in yard at the moment.
Turbo smashed to bits...
Customer drove 30 miles with oil pressure light on and no power till it ground to a halt.
These engines just soot up!
I refused to quote. 2005 407 1.6HDi (scrap)

Are these the ones with the sillycoon gaskets, i usually run a tap up inside to clean out any old coon left in there, same with water pumps, easy enough to snap of smaller bolts otherwise

Finally going to get round to a pipes and filters replacement and general clean up, does the oil cooler definitely have a coolant gallery running through it? I couldn't see any info in tech data
