Re my Ford Escort 1-8 1998 Local garage just changed rear wheel brake cylinders (were leaking) handbrake works ok but needs 7 clicks to pull on
Would this amount of travel be ok for mot?
Any tricks of the trade to reduce the amount of travel when I do have a go at brakes? In past has all ways been a bit of an issue
Many thanks for all help in the past Tricky

Garage changed just the brake cylinders?
Was the handbrake the same before the cylinder change? Why did you not ask them to look at the brakes in general if handbrake issues?
More info needed I think. It doesn't add up to me, sorry.

Yes certainly more info needed as these are pretty simple setup.
Are auto adjusters working, Is the cable correctly adjusted after the shoes have been set.
7 clicks should be fine for MOT as long as performance is good. That year Escort I always thought the teeth on handbrake were quite fine as in plenty of clicks but not that much movement.
7 clicks would drive me mad though.

many thanks for answers. The car originaly went in for an anti theft alarm problem. The garage phoned me and said rear wheel cylinders were leaking? I said whatever it needs do it.
Collected car, invoice shows a wheel bearing kit fitted (quess that was when leaking cyl were found?) and two wheel cyiinders, nothing about brake linings.
When I collected car it needed seven clicks for hand brake to be fully on?
When I originaly left car with them it need 3-4 clicks as had been adjusted by older mechanic at same garage to pass MOT
There will be no problem as garage good. just wondered if there were any tricks of trade as I have struggled to get down to 3-4 clicks when servicing rear brakes
Many thanks guys for all your imput its great to know you are there when I am in trouble Tricy

Tricky you may find this Ford Escort manual link useful. If you open it up and click on the braking system icon there is a handbrake adjustment icon to open and shows how to adjust step by step guide.

The problem could be a ridge on the outer edge of the brake drum due to wear where the brake shoes run & don't run, when the drum is fitted over the ridge the shoes are not adjusted enough, grind the ridge off and you will be able to adjust the shoes more (the brakes are suppose to be self adjusting but I use to find that they never work and always adjust the gear wheel) most of the time when the shoes are adjusted correct the cable does not need touching, I used to like both wheels locked on 3 clicks, but you often found that some one had gone straight to the cable & adjusted it before doing the shoes

Be worth trying to pump the brake pedal 30 times or so to try and get the self adjusters to kick in.

don't get too hung up on how many clicks it's got, if it's got a fine toothed ratchet& pawl mechanism on the lever that makes a difference the mot manual says that it must have sufficient reserve travel, ie movement to spare & that is the tester's decision
