Hi guys, i know there are a few LR people here. Edit It is a discovery mk 2 I very rarely do anything to any LR, other than oil and filter changes etc. I don't normally get involved in any repairs because I class them as commercials and I stick to cars (lot less heavy lifting and big bolts to undo ) But I have been asked to sort out a couple of advisories from a recent MOT and want to know what I am letting myself in for. Its a good customer so I have got to get the work done. But by myself or sub it out is the question. 1 OS Front wheel bearing has slight play? 2 Ball joint has slight play steering rack arm ball joint has slight play (2.2.B.1f) 3 Nearside Front Drag link end ball joint has slight play (2.2.B.1f) Any comments are welcome, and also, because I dont often look at the suspension set up, can you try and describe what the bits are from the above details? Identify on a parts diagram if at all possible? And then it has a power steering pipe leak, looks high up on passenger side of engine. If anybody wants the specific vehicle details I will PM the reg number. Thanks in advance

It depends if the play is really in the joints that are stated on the MoT above. I doubt it - MoT testers can often be a bit "optimistic" with the front axle of Disco2's, mostly because they don't want the work!!! Most wear problems are the front swivel-pins.
The one set of joints that you really must be aware of, and I cannot stress this enough, is the bearing/bush inserts that form the swivel-pins on the end of each axle yoke. If it is one of these four bushes, then run away from the job, unless you really want a fun time with grinders and pad-saws for 6hours per side. This job must be done properly, because the bushes are pressed into the welded-on yokes on the end of the axle tube. Mess the eyelets up, you write the axle off, and you cannot just push these things out.
All other ball-joints and work around the front suspension/steering gear are straightforward, although the Disco2 does have the dubious honour of needing a complete steering ball-joint assembly if the joint itself is worn.
The hub bearing unit is a complete assembly with the ABS sensor, and is a straightforward 4-bolt insert assembly to the hub-carrier. Easy job, although previous ABS repairs to the sensor wiring can render this a painful experience. It all depends on whether the ABS sensor is still plugged into the body harness near the front inner wings, or whether an "overlay" harness method has been used (on the driver's side).

Forgot to mention that the PAS leak is likely to be the gravity-feed hose assembly between the reservoir and the PAS pump on that side of the engine. Worth checking that first, as the hose is easy to fit on ramps, and not bad to source (very common fault). The pipe solid section chafes on the corner of the sump, because the foam-rubber protective sleeve has rotted away, and also the pipe assembly gets misfitted with too much bias towards the engine by those not familiar with the TD5 unit.

Valhalla is absolutely right (as usual!) What you describe would be nice and easy on a discovery 1, RRC or defender but Land Rover 'improved' the axles, especially the swivel parts on the D2. In fairness the axles are better in some respects, but it's certainly not as simple to work on. Have a good poke and pull at the suspension with a lever before committing yourself. Oli

Thanks.
Excellent info, as always.
Needs sorting, so I think I will drop into the local 4wd peeps for them to look and see what gives.
I might just get out of my depth on this 1 if not careful.
