Just curious but anyone know if there was a known issue with arch rust appearing on 05 plate Mazda 3. Have been looking at a couple of 3 Sport models and both had a slight rust spot in the same places. Really like this car a bit of fun 2nd car but am I best avoiding this make and model or am i being over cautious?
Thanks as usual Pete

Thanks as usual Pete Pete yes it is a known issue on these possibly like bad sealant between the inner and outer arch panels so water has gone between the panels and started the rust. Well know problem with the early 3's and 6's and and RX8's IIRC. As far as I amware there is/was no recall for this issue but if a Customer went to Mazda Dealer every case was treated on it's own merits Nothing wrong with being cautious. You don't say if petrol or diesel but the EGR valve can fail on early 1.6Ds so look for uneven idling or hesitation when accelerating. 1)Steering creaks and groans mean new front suspension bushes are needed. 2)A knocking from the front when the engine is cold check the exhaust! is it rattling? 3) On diesels black or blue exhaust smoke points to a failed turbocharger. 4)The end of the plastic dipstick of the 1.6D engine can break and drop into the sump the only fix is to remove the sump to retrieve it. 5)Some 2004/2005 cars have suffered from corrosion around the rear wheelarches. 6)The alloy wheel lacquer can bubble and blister. HTH.

Hi. Many thanks for the excellent advice as usual. Regards Pete Just checked as I wasn't 100% sure on DV6 Mazda 3 engine failures. ENGINE MAY SEIZEDescription : It has been identified that on a small number of vehicles the oil feed in the cylinder head and camshaft carrier may not be correctly aligned, allowing the oil flow to be restricted. If this this allowed to continue it is likely to result in an engine malfunction when the mileage exceeds 62,000. Remedial Action : Recalled vehicles will be checked for their presence in the affected range, and fitted with a new partial engine if so identified. VOSA RECALLS

When you consider the fact they share the same floor pan etc with a Focus, the Mazda 3's of similar age that I see for mot always have a lot more rust. I would buy a Focus over a Mazda3 any day of the week.
As for Mazda 6 they do like to rot, piles of junk.

Never seen Focus sills that bad.
