Took my car for an MOT at a new garage, I'm new to the area and have not found one I trust yet.
The mechanic failed it on rear spring coils. Listed as "broken".
I had a quick look after and they both look like they are in good condition.
The guy quoted me £180 to replace, this seems very steep. Is this guy trying to con me?

I'd suspect the coil spring has fractured or broken same meaning in my opinion. Close to the bottom coil where it rests against the cup. Usually it's quite difficult to Spot. But when it's your job You know where to look !
Try running a figure around the inside of the bottom or use a mirror
Genuine part or aftermarket ?
Has he quoted you for one or both ?

Could you please keep to one thread per subject thanks. I have deleted the twin thread you started in the Mechanical section. It isn't always obvious a coil is broken so it is or it isn't?

The quote is for both. Not sure if the parts used will be genuine or aftermarket.
I'll have a really good look at them tomorrow.
Is the price quoted reasonable?

Mechanical thread double dip deleted hence moving Valhalla's reply to here. Took my car for an MOT at a new garage, I'm new to the area and have not found one I trust yet. Is this guy trying to con me?No. Get him to change the springs, and explain to the receptionist and to the chappie doing the job that you would like to see the old parts before you pay the bill. That way you are assured of a safe car and one where you have not been ripped-off. ============================================================================================================================= Valhalla I have moved your reply to the MOT section from your Mechanical reply before I deleted it as the new member has done a double thread same subject.

Remember you are free to have your vehicle repaired elsewhere. How ever note The original MOT centre are entitled to charge you a retest fee. if it's been over 1 day since the test and isn't an item covered by the free retest items . I.e. Bulbs tyres etc...
It's up to half the maximum test fee . Which is currently around £54

Just when I asked him what was faulty about the springs he wouldn't give me a straight answer.

Those springs are known to fail, particularly if driven frequently over speed bumps and potholes. You could ask the the failed parts back and see what's broken for yourself

If I fail a car and the customer is unsure or questioning the failure, I simply offer to show them.

Is this guy trying to con me? sounds like you need a second opinion. its cheap for two springs,it works out at 150 plus vat!! anyway, its easy to get satisfied in this case. take your car to an independant garage, and ask them to price up one rear spring, dont tell which side!!! if they ask, tell them your wife took it for an mot and it failed on one rear spring, you dont know anything else. let them look and confirm, and tell you whats what.
