I have a vauxhall insignia 1.8 petrol 2009. I have a fault code 4 coming up (Code 4 - A/C on), the temperature goes straight to the red. Its not actually overheating though? Has anyone got any ideas please?

Can you be more specific I can't make a lot out of this When does the temp gauge go in the red From start or when driving If it does it when you turn account on might just be a siezed ac compressor causing the belt to slip and stopping your water pump So more info please

It first happened after driving the car for about 20 minutes, i pulled over and check the engine. It didn't seem excessively hot? Got it back home and disconnected the battery for 10 mins to try and reset but still the same.
I have just gone out to it about an hour later and as soon as i start the engine code 4 comes up and temp goes straight to the red?
I put a new battery on it yesterday but think this may just be coincidence?
cheers for getting back to me by the way.

Start with basics Is there coolant in the system Is the temp sensor connected or did you perhaps dislodge the wires when changing the batery Is (Are) the belt(s) OK Possibly a sticky thermostat (radiator wil be cold but the heater in the car will blow hot as hell)

Yes coolant level is fine, i checked the temp sensor was still connected ok. if it was thermostat playing up would there be alot of pressure in the hoses?

No as you have a pressurised system that will blow of any over pressure via the filler cap As for the thermostat It closes of the hoses to the radiator But will alow flow to the heater matrix in the car so you get hot air as soon as the car starts to heat up This is a comfort feature and standard practice in 99.9% of vehicles

natlor I have deleted your other thread on this subject. One thread per subject please I know your a new member thanks. ============================================================================================================================================== I'm trying to figure out what's going on. Air con won't cause the engine to overheat but a blown headgasket will.

Glad to hear it was that simple. Didn't sound simple. There again start with basics and should never assume the worst.

It will if the rad fans slow speed resistors are blown, my golf V5 estate spewed its coolant all over Cheshire Oaks multi-storey.
