Hi guys,
I am new to this forum and in search for some advice...
My car had a second hand engine fitted recently as the old one had bearings issue and it would have costed too much to rebuild the engine. So there we are new engine fitted, there is now a new "metallic" noise that wasn't there before.
It only starts making the noise when the car is cold, and it seems to disappear after 10 minutes once everything has warmed up. I notified the garage about this and they are telling me it's a gearbox (manual) issue. They replaced the gearbox oil as it was the only thing they could think of. The noise is still there after the gearbox oil change.
Now, I have basic knowledge, and I would like someone to confirm my assumptions. If the car is stationnary, and I press the clutch pedal, there is no connection between the flyweel and the gearbox input shaft. Is that right ? So if my car still makes the noise when I accelerate, the car is not moving and the clutch is pressed, it surely have nothing to do with the gearbox as no power is sent to the gearbox. Is it correct ?
I think they are just trying to put the fault on something else so they don't have to repair, but I just want to make sure I am in the right. I have watched videos and read about clutch / gearbox and I think I have a pretty good idea on how it works.
Any explainations, details are welcomed!

Input shaft and a fair section of the gearing still turns under friction if in neutral
Put it in gear and keep clutch depressed then it won't turn internaly period

What Make and model?. Do as Dave said but my guess would be in the engine as that's all you've changed. Had a focus with a metallic ping when cold and ok once warmed up turned out to be rings stuck on Pistons and ergo piston slap. Hope I'm wrong .

Yeah, as said if the clutch is down there shouldn't be any power being transmitted to the gearbox - the flow of power has effectively been broken. But...you do sometimes get a little "clutch drag" (where a tiny bit of force is still transmitted by the clutch plate, even if the clutch is down) and in theory you might still get the input shaft moving very slightly if it's in neutral and thus free to rotate. By putting it in gear (whilst stationary) with the clutch down, the whole gear box will be locked to the wheels and not moving at all.
You do sometimes get something called clutch chatter in some vehicles. You can hear this in neutral, but it disappears when you press the clutch down.
Did the secondhand engine come with any kind of warranty, or was it fitted at owners risk?

If your " new second hand engine " is noisy/knocking/smoking etc...
Then you'll need another
Did you source the engine or the garage ?
Breakers yards are normally petty good and will supply you another engine I would imagine within 28 days or maybe even 3 months?
Been a very long time since i last visited a breakers yard though so not up to date on terms and conditions

The car is a Peugeot 308cc 1.6 petrol, 2010. It has 53k miles on the clock.
Second hand engine has 28k miles, and 6 months warranty parts and labour. It was supplied and fitted by the car place.
I did the test this morning, clutch fully down, car in gear and when I go over 2000rpm the noise comes. It seems to be making it more the higher the rpm.
They are saying it's the gearbox, I'm saying it's not and it never made that noise before they replaced the engine. The clutch was also changed while everything was apart.
I'm not too sure where I stand, except for the noise the car runs pretty well, power is there...

You need to give them the opportunity to investigate and rectify any issues you have with the they have done. |

Thanks, I have already tried to explain and everytime all they say is gearbox this, gearbox that... Anyway I will drop the car for them to look at on Friday, and hope they can sort what is wrong with it. I can prove this is not gearbox issue, so they have less ground to stand on!
I'll keep you posted at the week end if things have moved, also looking at my other options such as claiming to my credit card company and then getting another garage to complete the repairs.

Tel them if car is in gear and clutch is depressed it can't be the gearbox and if he believes otherwise let him explain how something motionless can make a sound

Have you got a phone with camera/microphone yes, run the engine put it on your phone and upload it here then we can see and have a listen, then we can advise you what it is hopefully

Timing chains can make strange noises when there on the way out ,cant hear it so its all speculation.

Morning all,
I could not get a good recording, but after testdriving the car with me they admitted it was not gear box related. Yeah!
Apparently it is a tensionner for the fan belt that is making the noise, so they gonna replace it on Friday and we take it from there!
