Could anyone help with an idea of a price on a cracked rear bumper on a 61 plate VW golf? I recently bumped my daughters teachers car and have made a 4 in crack about 3 inches away from the left rear parking sensor, she got a quote for me that came to £614 and I find this quite a lot for what doesn't seem like much damage! It says £238 for a new bumper plus £24 for 4 parking sensor retainers paint and materials £100 and £150 labour! Including vat that's £614.56 am I right in thinking I'm being taken the Micky out of or this this a correct figure? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks kate

Sadly not for a decent bodyrepairer, your at their mercy if not going through insurance, cheaper option is finding same colour and spec bumper in salvage but again would need to be totally damage free for them to consider/accept it.

To be honest if your excess on insurance is around the £250 mark the premium is unlikely to rise by £400 next year

Your insurance excess is the amount of money you have to pay towards an insurance claim. Mandatory excess is what the insurance company considers a minimum excess on its policy, where as a voluntary excess is one you agree to pay when your take the policy out (in return for a cheaper insurance premium).
With a £150 mandatory and a £250 voluntary excess, your excess on any claim will be £400. Remember you will have to notify any other insurers of that claim for 5 years, you'll lose two years no claims discount, so for the sake of the £200 you'll get off the insurance you're probably better off paying for it yourself.
Have you been given a written quote/estimate?

On the insurance point, bear in mind the excess is usually only payable on your own repairs. Most (not all) insurers don't apply the excess to third party damage. But as others have said premium will still rise next time around!

These sorts of repairs often seem very expensive on the face of it, but the figure you quote isn't outrageous.
With parts like bumpers and other bodywork, it doesn't matter if you just crack it or smash the thing to bits if you have to replace it, it costs the same. A lot of the cost is painting. It takes a lot of time to spray all the layers and matching colours is a real skill. Mixing paint in small amounts isn't any easier or quicker than for big jobs.
Body coloured bumpers look great but they can be very expensive. A similar thing on a car a few years ago would probably have been just a bolt on bumper swap at a tenth the cost.

If it's a small crack, you may be able to find a non-dealership garage willing to have a go at repairing the bumper, which might be a bit cheaper.
