I had a Defender 2.4TDCi a few weeks ago, "bit of noise on the transfer box" had suddenly got a lot worse......the oil was like mercury when I drained it, and I never found all of the bearing needles from the intermediate cluster rear bearing! Every gear on the high-range gear train was chipped in some way or another!
