Hi, I have a 2009 Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 diesel. A few days ago the temperature gauge rose to 130 degrees and a warning message appeared indicating an air conditioning failure (code 4). There was a slight burning smell coming into the car. It usually runs at 90 degrees. I pulled over and checked the engine, it did not seem overly hot and there was no steam or pressure in the coolant tank when I opened it. I let it cool for a while and re-started it. Sat idle the temperature stayed at 90, but as soon as I drove it, it rose quickly to 130 again. I left it overnight and re-tried in the morning. Now what is happening is that the temperature rises to 90 quickly (about 2-3 minutes, whereas it always used to take 10-15 minutes) but it does not over heat. I think I can still smell a slight burning smell but it is not strong. I am taking it to a mechanic in a few days but was wondering if anyone had seen this before ? Thanks

It's referring to the A/C being turned off. Is it turned off or is it on? Check to see if there's anything in your owners manual as IIRC it should go into auto mode when the car is started. Low refrigerant or no refrigerant in the system might be the cause. HVAC system on an Insignia might not work properly if the battery was replaced or disconnected recently.

Not sure if you have an a/c fault
Or engine over heat
Thinking along the lines of seized a/c compressor or cooling fan ( burning smell )
Also car going into DPF regeneration ( a cleaning process )
Could explain the higher engine temps and smells

I think seing as a fault came up and engine ran hot You have a seized ac pump And I'm afraid the rapid heating is because you blew the head gasket when it overheated Or worse you put a tear in the head I hope I'm wrong for your sake But the faster warming up is something I've seen before

Did you get a resolution to this? - mine has the same issue (albeit with less speedy temp rises upon restart)
