May check egr as above. Just been 400 miles trip and car better but definitely notice increase in smell fumes after put foot down ie use lower gears during overtaking etc. Had co2 detector in car whole trip never beeped once. Engine never used drop oil and us still clean outside. Runs quietly and sweetly and achieved 44 mpg. Can't be too much wrong with it?

Did you have a CO (carbon MONoxide) or CO2 (Carbon DIoxide) detector?
Either way, take it to a garage before you gas yourself like a badger.

It was home by Co detector that measures low long exposure and high short exposure levels and never went off even on 4 hour trip. I have renewed pollen filter with Mann carbon activated element and also used air con bomb in car to freshen. Car feels much better fresher but as above felt 'smelly' after put foot down overtakes or accelerate hard 3rd gear etc. I have checked egr with soap. Couldn't detect leaks. I know suggestions have been made to take to a 'proper' garage by previous experience is that spend money and still not found cause. All due to 108k ml concerned blow by and if so car will go and be sold but if this is case would it still go so well, and not use oil and have good emissions? Could renew exhaust but again could be throwing money away from If engine worn?

It's not dragging the fumes through the rear of the car Boot/tailgate seal or I call them air pullers but the rubber flaps in the 1/4 panels, rear panel damaged or missing.

I've tightened the hatch lock nice and snug. I will check the flaps. Thanks :-)

It's obviously got a leak somewhere, you just have to find it!

Take the problem back to basics.
The exhaust fumes have to be leaking *from* somewhere. If its worse under load then either it's something like a duff breather hose (Engine rocking) or possibly a partially blocked exhaust pipe that only causes issues under full throttle.
The other step is to check where it's coming *in* to. The next time you're driving, try turning on the air recirculation system and floor it. If it's still smelly then it's possible the smell isn't coming in via the heater, but rather via another route (doors/boot as mentioned, or something like a perished grommet in the bulkhead).

I am not very familiar with the engine but egrs also tend to leak from time to time A easy and cheap way to find a leak is to mix plain water with dish wash and aply freely with spray bottle on cold idling engine Any leaks will form bubles
Bubbles ?

Bubbles ? Yes the escaping gasses will cause visible bubbling on top of the aplied water detergent mix even with very small leaks

Checked the egr this morning as suggested and no . bubbles. Focus is now on air vents in the rear as.per earlier post. There are 2 vents one each side in re boot almost below the rear lights. The air exits amazingly through 2 holes behind the rear bumper about 6inches from the exhaust. The only thing preventing fumes entering are the rubber flaps which should open under air pressure in the cabin ( is it a 767) but stop fumes entering by closing from outside.. There are 4 and they are difficult to reach but the 2 outermost feel slightly open at the edges. I may try to temporarily seal them and see if it helps. Has anyone renewed these it looks like a bumper off job by!
