Well had an afternoon on the springs job today, and I have been beaten by the pinch bolt on the first corner..So stopped the job before I rounded it off too much., despite heating and wd40, it just wont budge..I work as an electrical fitter so I have had a few fights with stubborn nuts/bolts in the past, and usually won, but before I chewed this one beyond saving, Ive thrown the towel in. With your expert advice It seems fairly straight forward job and I even bought a new set of (3) spring compressors with safety catches on. Attachment Deleted

What socket are you using?
Ideally you'll want an 6 sided 1/2 15mm socket on an breaker bar

Once the bolts out , you'll need an nice large hammer to beat the hub free of the strut
A copper hammer is usually best , but any will work , just be careful of abs plug

Thats exactly what Im using Mr B, except the breaker bar, but a similar method of force application. Ive heated it up as much as I dared, whilst using a plate to protect the brake pipes from the heat etc etc. But it just wont budge without slipping off and rounding off slightly. My Sons mate runs a garage so its going in on Saturday all being well....

Yep those bolts can be tight , and will have a tread lock on them
Sounds best , as if it starts rounding your gonna be in deep shit
Hear on here of folk having hub bolts shear off ( might have been rhubarb)
I've never been that unfortunate
A few short blast s with impact gun should have it free

I had to do a front spring on my parents old mk1 mondeo a few years back just before they sold it,spring had snapped at the top and gone past the top mount so it was scraping on the inner wing! The pinch bolt was a pain so to save snapping it off i ended up removing the whole strut with the front hub in one lump, took a lot longer but was easier in the long run.

We thought of that but time was moving on, and we dont have a socket large enough for the driveshaft end.
Those induction coil tools look like the DB's. just a bit too pricey for me.

Some of them are not all they're cracked up to be, especially certain US brands. There seems to be a big thread running in the 'States about these things either needing an eternity to heat anything up, or just not doing anything at all. I spoke to someone who makes these sorts of tools in the UK, and a lot of them are dubious to say the least. If you are going for one of these, it's got to be a good one, industrial strength, and that's going to require dipping into your pocket for a circa £1000.

I've done Springs on these Fiestas, and just dropped the whole leg out..
Snapped a strut pinch bolt on a Mondeo a few years ago..

Just done another of these on my pals ST today, spring crapped itself, bent the anti roll bar linkage, damaged the brake hose and destroyed the tyre, I had a spare shocker and spring down in my scrap pile, stripped it all off and then the top nut was seized, snapped a hex bit in top of shocker, ended up heating the nut and vice grips on the piston rod. (I hate doing that) Ended up using the spring and top bearing assembly from the scrap pile and the cars orig shocker. Gets it all done for my mate who was desperate for it for work tomorrow, ring him and he's gone to the pub.
