Are you sure you didn't get into your car on the wrong side, facing the wrong direction and accidentally put it into the wrong (right) gear? Let's be honest, who hasn't when you're still half asleep? I blame manufacturers putting pointy ar*e ends on cars, so you can't tell which end is which!

Every time I would jump in the passenger seat!

Was at McD's in the drive through and when i put the car into first gear the car started to go backwards , never experienced any, like this before , i turned the engine off and started it up again and it was ok , has this happened to anyone before ? and does anybody have any ideas which could have caused this ? This happened to me, I put my cap on the correct way around but made the mistake of putting my head on backwards to compensate! HTH

There used to be a few models of single-cylinder two-stroke engine tractors on the market. There were names like Field Marshal and Lanz. I can't remember which one was possible to start with the engine going the wrong way, so all day you had one forward gear and four reverses.

It's potentially a problem on a lot of Diesel engines. The Ferguson TEF20 tractor could backfire whilst being hand cranked and start running backwards. They solved it by putting a one way clutch on the injector pump.

As a 14 year old kid I had a Lambretta 150 I used to ride in the local fields - in the days when they were worth almost nothing. On failing to make it up a hill one day I rolled back with the clutch out and it fired up backwards - ran rough as timing way off of course but was a real party piece, I spent ages learning to actually ride it backward and got quite good in the end!
