The thing that struck me about the report, where the plastic sample phial had melted, was whether or not it was a certified container for petroleum distilates in the first place, or whether someone had just given the reporter a medical sample bottle with some fuel in! That is true because certain plastics dissolve in gasoline because they have similar chemical structures. The majority of plastics are made from molecules derived from petroleum. Plastics are just Polymers. Plastic containers should be made of a moulded polyethylene with a specification suitable for the intended purpose. There is some new Regs out in early October of this year with regards to Portable petrol storage containers.

Sorry I haven't been on line in a while as some family members have been ill. However just to update you. We informed the Garda(Police), customs & exise and car insurance. We couldn't produce receipts for fuel so this is something I would recommend or pay by credit card so you have records. However insurance sent an inspector and he agreed the car was damaged due to fuel. It has taken weeks of taking samples etc but they have finally agreed to pay €2000 approx to repair the engine which is great news. They would not provide loan car as the car was not taken to one of their approved dealers so that has been the biggest inconvenience.
I will keep you updated but since this has happened I have heard lots of it in various parts of Ireland with the west coast and midlands the biggest offenders.
Thanks for the replies MFK
