My wife drives the above and said that there was a noise that sounded like the exhaust. She drove almost 400 miles at the weekend but said she let the petrol run low and when car was not performing perfectly she thought she had sucked up dirt. Just checked it and it is hard to start and lumpy like a misfire and a definite knock noise which sounds like low in the engine. Too dark to check anything but I checked the fault codes as below.
P0328 knock sensor 1 G61 signal too high, value of resistance too low P0300 multiple misfire P0301 cylinder 1 misfire P0303 cylinder no 3 misfire P0302 cylinder 2 misfire
Based on this information any advice? Is it likely to be coil pack and would that cause the knock sensor. Any help much appreciated.
Thanks Matt

Hmm....if its misfiring it could cause the knock sensor to pick up?..depends how bad it is... When was it last serviced? Have you checked the plugs?
A noise that sounds likes the exhaust doesnt help much tbh....

Sorry didn't mean to mislead. My wife said it sounded like exhaust but it isn't. It is much more of a knock sound and engine is not idling correctly. It is lumpy, doesn't rev correctly from idle and does seem like it is not running on all cylinders. It had a full service in August - plugs, air and oil filter and oil change.

Would it have bent valves if it slipped. She now tells me it was making a noise for the last week but as I said she drove 400 mile country trip at the weekend and said it was perfect.

From memory I did the belt in 2011 and it was small belt around the twin cam and main belt around the rest.

Have you checked compression?. Don't know where you live but we have seen a lot of engine problems lately due to bad petrol. (Petrol stretching)It's where parifin has been added to petrol , it gets down by the Pistons and causes the rings to stick , causing bad running and knocking. Hope that's not your problem.

Sounds like it could be the coil pack from the description.

Based in Dublin, Ireland. She got petrol yesterday morning (Monday) and said car was not good after that and thought it was dirty fuel but I have since been told that the engine management light flashed a couple of times over the weekend (Sat / Sun) but didn't stay on. She drove back from the country approx. 200 miles on Sunday evening and said it drove fine. She wouldn't be tuned into knocking noise especially driving on a motorway with noise etc but would know if issues with revving or misfire etc. Knocking is not very loud but the engine is not sweet and there is a definite rattle from it. I haven't checked anything on the car yet except oil level which is fine and read the codes. Thanks

Thanks If you can hear engine knock (detonation) first fix the source of the mechanical problem and retest. Ensure the correct octane fuel (which you say me be suspect? ) was used (some engines require premium fuel check the owners manual). Aside from that for this code it's most likely the problem will lie either with the knock sensor itself or the wiring and connectors going from the sensor to the PCM. The voltage is above 4.5V but that specific value depends on the specific make and model of vehicle.

Have you cleared the stored fault codes? If so do the same codes come back? I'd be checking this thoroughly and not driving it until it's sorted

I have taken it off the road until I can check it. I want to remove the timing belt cover to have a look first as just like you said I didn't like the sound of it but won't be able to look until the weekend. After I cleared the codes I didn't leave it long enough running to know if they came back.
Where is the knock sensor located on this car? I have never done anything with a knock sensor before on any car. If car is misfiring say due to faulty coil pack could that cause the knock sensor to be triggered. Is there a definitive way of checking coil pack?
Thanks for replies. Appreciate the help.
Matt

Back to basics, check the timing, then plugs out and check condition of them, and then do a compression check. Post up the results

Engine has 145,000 km. Had a brief look at the car this evening. When I took off the big air filter cover there was oil up underneath it and also some around the coil packs but not down in the plug wells. Took out plugs and they were very sooty but not wet. Cleaned them up and put them back - they are NGK plugs fitted since August. Took off timing cover and everything appear fine with belt.
Checked oil level and it is low but no oil light on dash. Apologies I previously said oil was ok but I must have misread it in the dark the other night. Topped up the oil.
Cleared old codes and started engine which was difficult. Sounded like one that was flooded. Eventually started but cut out. Started again and once I held the revs up for a while she stayed running. Sounded fine when revs held but once I let her idle thee is a noticeable rattle in engine. After a few minutes the engine light flashes and when I read the codes there are 3 codes pending all of which related to misfire - multiple misfire, misfire No 2, misfire No. 3. Cleared codes several times but each time same codes return.
I haven't got compression tester to test the cylinders.
Any thoughts based on this information. Would really appreciate any help. Thanks
