Has anyone worked on these engines in regards to timing chains renewal. I am not one for cutting corners and when things go wrong I genuinely look to repairing to a pre-incident condition. I am in the process of renewing the timing chains as a kit and while dismantling the timing chain cover bolts/studs were very eroded into the alloy timing chain cover housing, and some have sheared off. I have read the dismantling procedure from IDS and it seems very vague in so far that the procedure misses out some areas of the dismantling procedure, in other words IDS advises to remove five bolts from the timing chain rear housing and then it shows the housing being removed, which in practice it clearly cannot be removed so easily. Once the cover bolts/hoses have been removed the housing can be moved away from the cylinder block, however at the sump area at the front in between the cover housing and cylinder block it appears that two hoses are attached/bolted to the inside of the housing and do seem to stretch a little when pulling the cover away from the block, which are clearly not mentioned during the full disassemble procedure from the IDS instructions, which has left me now wondering what these two hoses are and it now looks like the sump and other items may have to be removed to carryout the procedure of removing the rear timing chain cover housing.
Anyone got any experience on these to share?

So you want to remove the timing chain rear housing assembly ?
yes you'll need to remove the sump and ladder frame
I'm guessing the broken stud isn't accessible in situ
the hose go from block to pump , obscured behind the fuel pump though

Big job has just got bigger ! !
Can you not lower the block enough to get access to the broken studs ?

Thanks guys for the replies, no my drill is too big to locate straight and correct into the right positions. I have removed the sump pan and oil pickup and oil pipe from the ladder, then removed the 14 bolts from the ladder frame and found that the IDS don't mention the two bolts in the lower bell housing area of the ladder frame, unless I have misread it I also needed to remove the right hand side drive shaft mounting off the ladder frame, which can be carried out without removing the drive shaft completely . The ladder frame still at this point cannot be removed because IDS advise that the clutch, flywheel and back plate will need to be removed prior to removing the ladder frame, which I have found out that the ladder frame is held into position by two locating dowels, hence I have managed to lower the ladder frame at the front end sufficiently to remove the timing chain rear housing cover . I hope the ladder frame gasket will be OK . All I need to do now is drill out the broken studs and fit some new ones, buy some new gaskets and start the rebuild I don't know whether any of you guys have ever removed the injection pump on these engines, but according to Ford IDS you need a special tool to remove the injection pump pulley, which I have the tool but to me the tool is not designed to remove the pulley, but more in my opinion designed to hold the pulley as the tool looks to me to be designed to expand inside the hole(s) of the sprocket rather than pull it off. In the end a wedge behind the pulley and a stout knock removed the pulley no problem For a timing chain job this van has been a nightmare up to now, the engine components deteriorating and the timing chain kit having parts missing when supplied twice, makes me wonder what is happening in the parts departments and some garages doing these jobs

The tool listed like you say doesn't quite fit. I use my own puller to remove.

Having now resolved the issues around the damaged studs in the timing chain cover housing I am now facing the possibilities of Ford conversion set price of £82 less 10% + 20% vat , the thing is that for 3 damn gaskets I think that price is extortion. I have tried flee bay with no success and my local engineers say that they only supply conversion sets at £80, does anyone know where else I can try for the individual gaskets?

Are the gaskets too difficult to make?

Are the gaskets too difficult to make? They are metal gaskets chippie otherwise I would have made them. Is this your vehicle or a customers? Yes it's a customers vehicle, the price given was for the cam belt and timing chain renewal, what I didn't count on was the studs breaking off, and no matter how I tried to warm them after the first one breaking some of the others followed. Rang Ford again today and they are taking the pi** really, yesterday the gaskets were £82 less 10% + 20% vat, now today they are £60, £9 for a water pump gasket, £32 for the timing chain housing gasket and £19 for the timing chain cover gasket. I pointed out that a new water pump including gasket is only £17.99 and the reply came back they are priced to get you to buy the new parts I am thinking of writing up to Ford to complain really, for three tin gaskets this is a complete rip off.
