2003 1.6 zetec, today the car started hunting once warmed up and at normal idle and occasionally stalled, upon looking under bonnet i could hear and see the a/c pump clicking and the clutch stopping and starting, this seemed to be the cause as after unplugging the a/c pump the car ran well, what i am unsure of is there a problem with the a/c pump/clutch or is the ecu not altering the revs, although it made no difference if a/c was turned on or off on the dashboard button.

A/c shouldn't make it stall , if compressor is cutting in/out to offen it's normally a sign of too little gas pressure.
Have you checked the inlet manifold t-piece section ? As it's this that normally goes soft

Guy went away with it as it ran fine when pump disconnected and rang me to say it was fine as he ran about in it,was asking the question as i wasn't convinced either that pump was the problem,i still think engine not compensating when pump running, doesn't do it when first started and idling at higher revs only when idle drops

You sound like you have about three or four different issues/problems here, the a/c thing is just showing up issues with pcm control
